Yes we have a 50% sell-on clause for Edwards. Although not necessarily his value, he has a £52m release clause, which implies that Sporting values that 50% significantly above £12m...I'm sure we'd be highlighting that in any negotiations for Porro that involves voiding the sell-on clause for Edwards. It certainly gives us some useful bargaining power during January, if the reports are true and we intend to sign two players (i.e. more cashflow available for the second player).

Edwards is averaging a goal/assist every 1.5 games this season. If he keeps that rate going, it's a 25% improvement on last season (shows he's progressing not plateauing). It's the kind of offensive stats and development trajectory that could feasibly attract substantial bids in the summer - particularly as he's replicated this productivity in the CL, not just the Portuguese league. Therefore, we should be mindful of not undervaluing how much that 50% sell-on clause is worth during negotiations for Porro.
Trouble is that 50% sell-on clause is only valuable if they are planning on selling him. If they're not then this doesn't help us much. Also they could end up gaining a theoretical £12m on the sell on free for Edwards only for him to pick up an injury next season and never get a move anywhere.

If I was them I wouldn't give us anywhere near that much off the price, I'd be looking at £5-8m reduction at the very most.

They are far more likely to sell him if the 50% sell-on clause is removed. They're not a rich club, Edwards is unlikely to feel massively tied to Portugal, and interest from bigger clubs is likely. The sell-on clause would currently be a huge barrier to any suitors, as Sporting wouldn't want to part with a key player for only half his market value.

Imagine Emerson Royal in these positions

I’ve not watched any of him aside from his involvement in Champions League games this season.

But from this he looks much more suited to being a wingback than Emerson will ever be. He has that “converted winger” look about him going forward whereas Emerson is very much an out and out, old fashioned defensive right back. Which right now is not the best fit for us but this guy could be perfect!

I can’t see that at all - if you watched the City match last night you would’ve noticed they have a very talented young right back already. They’ll just be happy to take their sell on fee
I agree, they never seem to stand in the way of what their players want. I can't imagine it'd be different for a former player. They'll take the money and let him go if he would so choose to come.

Seeing our top 4 rivals in Liverpool & Chelsea already go for some quick moves to solidify their squad it would be very nice to see a deal like this pick up some steam.

Paratici, Levy & Conte have had a month to talk about this stuff. There shouldn't be much reason to drag deals along.

Regarding Porto, my worry is that Conte isn't sold on him and it's more of a 'club signing'

But sadly their will be reason to drag deals along, haggling over the prices as per, you can be certain sure.

Remarkable that Liverpool end up with a deal done for the biggest breakout star of the WC on the open market before the window opens and under “market” price while we’re likely to take the whole window haggling over a player with a release clause when we’ve known for 12 months we desperately need a top RWB.

This is likely the problem. Because if Conte isn't sure we as a club shouldn't be.

If Conte were to leave post Porro we would have a very good RWB which would be a very bad fit for any manager coming in playing 4 at the back (cough cough - Poch)

We played plenty of formations with wingbacks under Poch as well. Don't think that would be a waste.

Not to mention we have Udogie on the way in the Summer. Any manager (if we added Porro) would be foolish to not use talents like that in their best positions.
