Yeah, we didn't want to pay the £100k+ a week and then Liverpool swooped in. It was the same with Wijnaldum as well.

God, imagine if we signed Mane & Wijnaldum that summer :ROFLMAO:

We definitely would have won the league in that last season at WHL.
Thanks for reminding me of that! Thanks Levy!

Easy to dismiss £100k per week as affordable now, but to say it would have broken our wage structure at the time is an understatement. It's more than Eriksen & Vertonghen (two of the first names on the teamsheet) earned combined in 2016!

We're talking about the summer when a new TV deal was signed worth almost double the previous deal, resulting in obscene transfer and wage demands. While we could have afforded to pay Mane £100k per week, we could not have afforded to increase our whole starting XI's wages in line with that - something that was a constant challenge for us as a club, with our players routinely being offered proportionately huge wage increases that still paled in comparison to what they could have earned at "big 4" rivals, and while key players were constantly looking (or at least rumoured to be looking) for a move to a "bigger" club for higher wages.

Not sure why you DM'd me instead of replying here, but if you read my post (#7685, just below yours) my stance on Mane / Wijnaldum is explained.

The "DOH!" rating was not for your desire to have signed them, but for your sarcastic "Thanks Levy!" remark.
My earlier post gives a decent explaination of why, but perhaps you're unaware of how carefully our wage structure had to be managed during Poch's era, with a constant balancing act of trying to offer new signings a competitive wage without causing unrest in the squad.
Mane was not better than Son, Kane or Eriksen, but was asking for circa double their wages. Surely you can understand the issue there?

So perhaps you should be saying "Thanks Levy for somehow convincing a squad of players that was good enough to be in the top 3 for 3 consecutive seasons to stay at the club despite being on a fraction of what our rivals would pay them" rather than taking a cheap dig at him for what was probably the correct decision at the time.

Sorry, but lately it seems that more and more posts on SC are laced with anti-Levy bias even when there is no reason for it. It got old years ago, so it would be nice to occasionally get through a single page of comments in a player thread without encountering it. Plenty of genuine opportunities for everyone to criticise/complain without creating them. ;)

DIdn't want to reply to you in here because this is not the 2016-17 transfer thread. You are quite right about the wage structure. My complaint about Levy was more about his inability to get any decent players in and refusal to delegate such operations to others. Wanyama & Janssen I could understand but Nkoudou, Sissoko & Maximus Tainio were hardly of the standard of Mane & Wijnaldum. Apologies for not making myself clear.

Feels like a weight off our shoulders than we won't be relying on him in big games.

Great character, person and mentality so like others have said I wish him nothing but the best. But thank god I don't have to watch him play.

Probably been done but i hear Sissoko asked for a 100,000e per completed pass bonus in his contract.
Watford said......

Sure, no problem.

Sissoko gone *and* they paid us actual money!
All I need to know now is that he signed in time to play tomorrow, and it's been a pretty good week.

Moussa starting straight away for Watford.

We all know he's going to go on a lung-bursting run from his own penalty box, shrug off Alli, leave Skipp for dust, annihilate Dier, and as a confident Lloris charges out to shut him down, he'll calmly finish the move with a delicate chip up and over the keeper and into the centre of the net.

As long as it's only a consolation goal then fair play to him. Was always a hardworking pro for us.

our fans have been attacking him, scapegoating him, and begging for him to leave every year since he joined.

don't think he really feels the need to say goodbye to them.

The fans have sung for him and supported him from the start. Virgins on Twitter and forums that he’d never read might be a different story.

Typical that he's starting against us, and he'll be wanting to put in a performance. Why couldn't we have delayed the transfer by a day or two?

Best wishes to him, just not against us!
