Hugo should of course (as any of the players that we would like to shift) be entitled to see out his contract.
But choosing to stay also implies that he potentially may not be registered in the 25-man squad.
Especially as we currently have 20 non-HGs over the age of 21.
I get the feeling that someone like e.g. Dier probably does not believe that the club would not register him.
Really don't think we can even afford to register him and taking away a spot from an outfield we might actually use.

Also, we have Forster as #2 and then the two younger back-ups so are plenty covered.

I think you are right about Dier so hopefully he has had the situation made very clear to him.

Correct me if I'm wrong but wouldn't the salary cap mean a massive loss in wages. And what sane team would use one of their 3 designated player slots to pay an aging keeper? Surely you save the designated slots for outfield players?
Don't think it's unreasonable that a team might use a Designated Player spot for the reputational benefit of having a World Cup winning captain, even if he is a GK. Despite his age, i still think he's plenty good enough to do MLS and would bring a lot more to any team.

He's had plenty of money of the club in return for his service. And you just want to let him have £5m more for doing nothing just to be nice?
(i appreciate contracts work both ways and he's entitled to see out the contract and we fucked up for giving him a year too long but still, having been given every opportunity to find a new club to now not go when he's not needed because he thinks he's too good for the options seems a little off)
I don’t think its he thinks he’s too good for the options, he wanted to speak to the manager before joining the new club and it appears Sarri weren’t interested.

it might just be me but i couldn’t give a shit about the 5m but i do give a shit about the club showing a bit of class and not just cancelling contracts of 10 year servants and club captains.

Only MLS if we let him walk, MLS transfer window is closed.
He actually still can't sign - even if we let him leave for free. He would have needed to be a free agent before the MLS window closed. It's a needlessly complicated rule (like many in MLS), but that is apparently the rule. MLS is not an option for him at this point, even if a club wanted to pay DP wages for a goalkeeper (which, with the exception of Roman Burki, has been a massively bad decision for all clubs in the past).

Postecoglou asked if Lloris could stay

You can't just have any number of players you want and I'd say it's unlikely we'll have three goalkeepers on our list.

Just to clarify in case anyone is confused like I was at first glance:

Postecoglu was asked by a journo the press conference if there's a chance Lloris could stay this summer (answer: no). He didn't ask Levy or the club if Lloris could stay (my initial WTF impression).

There's no chance we're going to register him over the HG Forster who is arguably the better keeper now anyway. If he doesn't end up leaving I think his contract will be ripped up.

Loris is certainly one who has given us fantastic service and definitely deserves respectful treatment by the club!

I could see that happening if he doesn't find a #1 spot by the end of the month.
If I were him i'd be itching to go to the MLS for a year or two if you can't find a top club in Europe. It's a really good career move for older players imo.

I don't really get this. Cancelling Hugo's contract would be a benefit to him, and a financial cost to the club. Spurs would forgo a transfer fee, and we might have to buy him out of his 1 year contract while Hugo himself can negotiate a higher salary at his new club as they will getting him as a free transfer.

We've already set a dangerous precedent with Aurier and Doherty, both now playing for Premier League sides, and Serge actually doing really well.

I'm not sure how this works in practice but I'm guessing the negotiations would mean we pay say 3/4 of what were going to pay him. If he then finds another club he gets that plus his new lower salary which means he'll get more than sitting out his contract.
It all depends if he thinks he can find another club.

I’m not a big fan of Forster as I think he is just too slow to get down and cover his angles. As a shot stopper Lloris is still light years ahead but his achilles of distribution means the modern game has moved on from Lloris. Would be worried if we had an early injury to Vicario and had to rely on Forster for any length of time.

If he can't get a move, keep him in a coaching capacity for his last year. It's better than ripping up his contract.
