As much as we need players out Hugo Lloris should be afforded all the grace in the world to make his decision on his future and if that means staying for the season then so be it.

10 years of service with many of this being club captain ought to mean something.
nah we aint a charity, he clearly said he wanted to go, new challenge, now he has found the suitors arent plentiful, wants back, cant afford to have someone on hugos wages for a year, as well as taking up a overseas player spot if he wont play

Hugo should of course (as any of the players that we would like to shift) be entitled to see out his contract.
But choosing to stay also implies that he potentially may not be registered in the 25-man squad.
Especially as we currently have 20 non-HGs over the age of 21.
I get the feeling that someone like e.g. Dier probably does not believe that the club would not register him.

If he can't find a club we'll just need to cut a deal with him and cancel his contract once the window closes. His wages are absurd for a 2nd/3rd choice keeper.

if he wants to be the number1 goalkeeper somewhere, how many teams that can afford his wages are looking for one?
It's always sad to see great players decline, but it does look from the outside like Lloris's hopes/expectations around his next destination are unrealistic. Seems as though he wants to be first choice at a big club whilst earning a big salary. Sadly, I think those days are gone for him.

I'd be surprised if he gets a move to an established club as a number 1. His 4 options are either:

- Move to a big club in the CL as number 2, gambling on injuries and being a rotation keeper.
- Move to a lesser team as number 1 and take a pay cut
- Move to MLS
- Cancel his Spurs contract and gamble on a club getting injuries and picking up an emergency keeper on a free

Sadly, don't think he's a good enough goalkeeper anymore to play as first choice for a top level side, and his age won't do him any favours. I think his best bet is to take a pay cut perhaps with some help from Spurs and be no1 for a mid table side in Europe.

Also, without wishing to do the man down, who, out of the teams who could afford him, is looking at him and thinking "yeah, he's our guy"? He's been quietly ushered out of the French squad, his last season with us was full of errors, he doesn't inspire confidence in the defence... he really needs to temper his expectations and either reduce his wage demands to widen the pool of potential suitors, find a bench to warm or just see out his contract (or come to an agreement to end it early) and quietly retire.

I agree with your comments but I think he retired from international football after the World Cup as oppose to be ushered out.

It's especially brutal on keepers when their powers wane. No hiding place and little they can do teamwise to make up for it in effort etc. A rather sad, anti-climactic ending to it all for a fine servant of the club and an absolute worldy of a player throughout most of his career.

He did, but I imagine there was probably a conversation where he was told he wasn't going to be the first choice going forward and they wanted to give him the option of going out on his own terms.

hard to see any option other than MLS if he really wants to have real shot at being #1
Correct me if I'm wrong but wouldn't the salary cap mean a massive loss in wages. And what sane team would use one of their 3 designated player slots to pay an aging keeper? Surely you save the designated slots for outfield players?

I think that’s right and a really good point.

I don't follow MLS closely in the least, but I get the impression that the designated player slots are overwhelmingly used on attacking players (who naturally command the highest wages). The slots are scarce, and it would be very unusual to use one on an aging keeper.

He's not going to stay and risk not being named in the registered PL squad. He'll go in the end. He's one of the outs I am least worried about. Dier, Sanchez, Tanganga, Ndombele, Hojbjerg I want out.

What is more important? Playing? or piling cash on top of the millions he has already?
He could easily find somewhere that would happily install him as No1 but on reduced wages.

He's had plenty of money of the club in return for his service. And you just want to let him have £5m more for doing nothing just to be nice?
(i appreciate contracts work both ways and he's entitled to see out the contract and we fucked up for giving him a year too long but still, having been given every opportunity to find a new club to now not go when he's not needed because he thinks he's too good for the options seems a little off)
