He definitely needs either to be stronger or learn the dark arts of buying himself a foul, although the squad and our team approach to set pieces isn't doing him any favors at the moment. I'd like to see him really start shoving people - like test how much shoving you can do before getting a penalty called against you; I bet it's a lot of shoving. If he's not going to do that, then sell the foul. Tussle and complain pre-corner so the ref is focused on you and then when you feel the body check, make a big show of the contact - flail your arms and scream, end up on the ground, etc. What he's doing now (meekly getting backed into the goal while trying to keep an eye on the ball) is clearly not working but because he's still sort of trying to play the ball the refs aren't inclined to call any fouls.

I have serious reservations about him but maybe he just needs a year to get use the the physical nature of the premier league and he will be better from corners next season. If not then Summer 2025 we will need an upgrade.
I don't have reservations about him, he is quality, but there are some improvements he could make.

Personally I don't buy into thr whole, we should protect our goalkeeper, the goalkeeper protects the whole team, by keeping the ball out of the net, he defends himself and his box/goal first, it starts with him.

Maybe it's just me, I want my keepers to take control of thr controllable so to speak.

When a keeper is poor at coming for and claiming the ball they often opt for the more European approach and punch the ball clear. Whereas in Vicario’s case he’s becoming more like a rabbit in headlights every corner. Was it Seaman? I can’t remember who but an ex keeper was commenting recently on how ‘skinny’ Vicario was. I know he’s an excellent shot stopper but if you both lack the physical presence to dominate your penalty area and fail to use the back up option of punching the ball clear then you’re not going to survive in the EPL. Fortunately from the clubs perspective, should they deem Vicario to have flaws that can’t be rectified then there’s been a lot of reported interest in him in Italy… getting what we paid/a profit shouldn’t be an issue. What will be an issue is finding a better keeper for anywhere near what we paid for Vicario.

He'd be helped a lot of he or someone else just walked over to the defender on him and pushed them over before the whistle goes.

Force the referee to focus on that area of the box.

Fuck me. If this isn't knee jerk I don't know what is.

He needs to improve in his command of the box but I just don't know what we are coaching there. It is clear as day its a target for the opposition but we don't seem to do anything about it....I can't imagine he is ignoring his coaches in match, the defence is focused on zones, its all a fucking mess but I don't know how much that is on him.

People were saying not so long ago he was our player of the season. He is an excellent shot stopper, very good in distribution and is vocal as well. I am sure I have read a team of the season and he was the goalkeeper.

Lol at people actually talking about replacing Vicario because he has a single weakness which is being exploited by our own defenders and defensive set up being utterly inept. Good luck finding a better keeper.

Easy question here. Would any of the other teams in the top 6 have him with this current problem. The simple answer is they would even consider it. I really hope he can get over this as he's a very good shot stopper but we can't keep on giving away goals where he's rooted on his line or even a couple of yards behind it. You can guarantee that the first corner that Chelsea get on Thursday there will be a player on him and a ball going into the 6 yard box. He has to command that area and come for the ball. We also need to try and protect him more but from what I read on here he does not want that.

How many of the goals he's conceded would you say have been absolutely his fault? Like not maybe he could've done better or maybe he was fouled. But actually categorically his mistake. Like the several Raya mistakes this season, for example. Or the howler Allison made that lost Liverpool their game at the Emirates. Or obviously many many giant errors by Onana.

It doesn’t need to be complicated, you cannot leave an opposition player free to sit on and f### with your keeper. If they put a player there, then he must be marked no exceptions. Our approach to setting up for corners has a look of theory worked up on a whiteboard.

I would say at least 3-4 Are directly his fault where the ball is in the middle of the Six yard box and he’s stuck on his line. Third v Arsenal Man C in the cup come to mind stright away and I know there have been others

It does also seem that Ange is halfway expecting referees to do the " right " thing and call those as fouls.

He mentioned in his most recent presser, that he was watching CL games and noticed those deliberate attempts to block/harass the keeper were rightfully called as fouls.

The one against city is about the most blatant foul on a keeper you can get. He barges him into the net. The Arsenal one I guess although if a player is completely unmarked with a free header there is obviously a lot wrong with the defending, and it's fiendishly difficult for a keeper to deal with a ball delivered so flat and with pace at the near post. If he comes and doesn't get there he's cost his team a goal. I think he's entitled to think one of our players might consider challenging for the ball in that scenario.

What really annoys me about these corner situations, is why don’t we act the same when we get a corner? We’re so nice and timid and trying to be fair, but no one else is. Also, our delivery from corners has been awful for years, whereas other teams can put it right under the bar and cause havoc. We really need to wake up from this, we need a man forcing their player out of the way of Vic, and we need to start doing it at the other end. We are toothless in defending and attacking set pieces.

Every aspect of his game apart from dealing with corners is great

But like in any team sport if you have a team mate lacking in one aspect of the game the teams helps out

I'm seeing zero help from anyone including what I'm hearing from the manager

De Gea got united player of the season think 4 years running. He was questioned in the first year

But the greatest manager of all time kept faith

I’d use Porro’s fighting spirit for him to be our man on the opposite keeper, and also to get the guy off of Vic at our end. Give him that job and I think he’d love it. We’re not then losing Romero’s aerial power in the centre at both ends.
