I've mentally convinced myself he's out 'on loan', unavailable and learning his trade.

Which he hopefully is, by training with top quality coaches and understanding the demands of the boss (not other coaches/tactics if actually on loan).

IF he was proving himself constantly in training etc., I have no doubt he could force his way into this team.

I'm also not a fan of Royal, but here we are.

It would be worrying if you was tbh ?

How does one teach one to be mentally tough in training games and drills?

Surely one can only get mentally tough under pressure. He has played in pressured games. The championship play off final is the biggest domestic money game in world football. He did alright in that...

He is not starting tonight.

Maybe he makes the bench.

Just because you think Emerson is the worst player in the starting XI does not make Spence a better option. Conte and the coaches are best positioned to make that determination.

But, just because he is not ready now - does not mean he is not making improvements, and won't be a factor in the future. It takes time, hard work, and patience by the fans.
I don't know if Spence is a better option than Emerson as I haven't seen enough of him but I have seen a lot of Emerson and he is a weak link. I was saying that tonight in the LC would be an ideal opportunity for Conte and us to see how he looks in a proper game and not just what has been seen in training. I haven't seen the team for tonight but he (Conte) must be playing a few bench players rather than risk to many players for the weekend.

The old “this other player isn’t very good” argument.

The dumbest argument, thank you for providing.
I don’t know if you disliked the way in which the other poster framed it, but the quality of competing senior players to whether a young player gets to play isn’t a dumb argument at all.

Had Kane as an example come through the ranks when we had the likes of Berbatov, Keane, Bent and Defoe he might not have had a chance to play, even in the Europa League.

If Spence were a CM (e.g. like Sarr) he would have had four high calibre midfielders to compete with and the fans wouldn’t demand him to play in the way they do know.

Conte clearly doesn't think much of Spence be it a technical or tactical stand point. But don't forget Bass didn't go straight in the side either. Also, Forest aren't a shit league 1 side, they're a prem side who'll have a strong side out as its a chance of silverware for them as much as us. So, Conte goes with those he trusts.

I’d imagine that Spence’s general vibe is that of someone quite immature. He gives off that impression in his previous problems at Boro. It’s probably Conte wanting to see him mature a bit in his application and demeanour that is holding him back.

It is a dumb argument. No top manager plays a youngster before they’re ready.

Kane playing a few EL matches is very different to proposing a young player starts in the Prem.

It’s like fans are unaware that the Prem is a very high level.

In fairness to him, he looks handy, and seems (based on the 30 odd mins he got) to be a decent attacking threat with far more confidence in moving forward with the ball at his feet than any of the other options. I'd give him a go at Leeds, not much to lose, last game before the w/c.

I said it in the match thread but I didn't see anything from him to suggest he shouldn't be playing more.

Did notice that he wasn’t passing to Kulu that often which could be a problem, but still think he deserves a chance to start a match in the league - just provides so much more energy at RWB.

Thought he did well in today's cameo, that run earlier on when he looked around and found nobody in space then drew a foul was a good run.

I didn’t see the game, but:
- did he offer at least something?
- was he defensively better than shite?

because if either one of those things is true, I can’t see why he wouldn’t get more game time

Yeah he offered pace, directness and power. He is raw in terms of knowing how to play with Kulu as someone noted above but that comes with playing.

I would play him on Saturday.

He did as good as he could, but he's not familiar with the team mates. Comes with game time.
You can see he has extreme qualities
