I think I’m more excited to see what happens at AM now we aren’t so constrained by HG issues, than I am about this one being potential tied up.
Seeing as Maddison seemed to be the homegrown option for AM, can anyone think of any foreign players of the same ilk/style as him that we could potentially be targeting?

FWIW I wasn't doubting him, just pointing out he's not a direct link to the top brass just because he's in the same part of the world. He's no better than any of the other more informed journalists, and jumps on the twitter gravy train just like they do from time to time. A lot of these journalists sources are each other, that's how they cover such a wide field. How do I know this because I've seen snippets from the whatsapp group they are all involved in, and of course he gets his own stuff as well.

He has the problem, like lots of journalists, that his comments get chopped up by aggregators and so unless you watch the source material, fans don’t get a full understanding of what he says. It must infuriate them as it casts doubt among the fanbase of their credentials. Like I said earlier, his comments today regarding Spence weren’t any different from what I am fairly certain you’ve said in the recent past, that the deal wasn’t done, but could change at any time.

Anyway, fingers crossed this isn’t another false dawn and it goes ahead now. Would be good to have him in for a beasting at the training ground next week.

Be interested to see how well he does under Conte’s guidance. He's certainly got a fair bit to learn.

I don't see this signing improving us at RWB immediately, but based on the 'what if' element, the homegrown status, I'm all in.

Pleased this one looks (finally) getting over the line - not just because of the potential of a wingback like Spence can achieve in a Conte inspired team, but what doors this opens up for what looks like our final two transfer targets in CB and AM.

Strange how none of the big clubs in England came in for him .

They aren't really a good fit, are they? Man City has Cancelo/Walker, Liverpool have TAA, Chelsea have James. For us, his competition is Emerson and Doherty, two players I think he would view as easier to supplant as the starter. Arsenal have shitty options but they would never have more pull than us when it comes to this position, Spence's strengths and Conte's capacity to improve wingbacks. It all checks out in our favor for this one. Him reportedly having interest from Dortmund is a great sign, in my opinion.

Also without intentionally beating the same boring old drum, the HG quota makes a difference.

City probably viewed Philips in much the same way we viewed the Spence deal and fans might have asked themselves why they didn't target Bissouma instead - all relative to clubs individual needs I guess.

Lyall Thomas says £12.5 million upfront with possibility of rising to.£20 million with add ons.

Middlesbrough supporters seem content with the fee.

Levy ground Gibson into the dust!

I believe Spence will prove a great signing. Looks so classy and fearless for such a tender age.

Way I see this is this…

He may not be first choice in the position but overall this is the first choice option which allows us to strengthen in other areas. Trix has mentioned this several times so if indeed we are getting him, it means this is our best chance at lifting level of the whole team (assuming other targets are achieved) - Moneyball style.

hopefully we move forward quickly now on other areas.

To be fair to Ali, we've all sat here thinking that this has been stuck in stalemate, so probably he was told it was still stuck in the same place only for things to have progressed today.

We have all been thinking this deal will take ages, because it has.
