That's exactly it mate!

Spence would be HG obviously, but if we couldn't get it over the line and had to look to Italy for our RWB, that's when a player like Maddison would come into play instead of a foreign AM.
Well in that case I hope it doesn’t get done. Would much rather Maddison ?

Knowing what we know about the way Fabio works, the expectations from Conte, and our general M.O. this window; I imagine that once this is resolved, there is a good chance we'd see the rest of our essential business being done rapidly. (Excluding opportunistic deals, which generally happen later anyway)

Only ones I’ve seen, are tentative links to Paqueta, Maddison and Zainolo, plus maybe Gloukh as more of a prospect.
Also SMS and JWP, but yes, it all seems very vague In regards to an AM. Hopefully if Djed really does get done soon then things will start moving in that regard. If we really are loaning them Scarlet then surely we wouldn’t do that without agreeing a deal for Spence.

Yeah, obviously, also 50mil more expensive, which is kinda significant
Totally agree, but we are going to spend a significant amount ( I assume) on a foreign creative midfielder so why not spend that on someone who is ready to go in the league and is proven?

Honestly, I've seen nothing to suggest that's actually the case and if we do spend upwards of 60-70mil on a CAM that isn't as good as Maddison, i'll agree with you

And when the boot has been on the other foot we have lauded Levy on his business skills. Gibson is doing nothing wrong and is looking after his club. Annoying isn’t it?

I don’t think that’s accurate at all. Quite the opposite, in fact.
Levy has often been criticised for expecting too much for players we want rid from the club.

That is the key factor here. Boro have wanted rid of Spence, which is why he was loaned to Forest. No way Boro thought they had a £20m asset when they let him go to out on loan.

Pure opportunism on their part now, which is in danger of becoming greed.

I’m not suggesting that amount ( and no suggestion he would cost that as yet) just the principal behind it ?

Maddison is absolute top quality. It must be one hell of a player we are after if we want the foreign option like Nkunku or someone of that level.

You just know this deal will drag until Aug 31st. All because of Gibson being a muppet. He won’t get what he wants, so he’ll instead make everyone wait, just to feel like he got his pound of flesh. Which really makes me want us to pull the plug and leave him looking like the schoolyard bully that he is. Alas, I know how important the HG quota is, therefore we will stick with it until the bitter end. But deary me. He sounds so petty. He’s gonna get a fat check for a somewhat unknown entity, but ‘cos he has to have dick measuring duel with Danny, he wants to make it annoying and painful.
I feel most sorry for Spence. As Gibson really is treating him poorly, in making this drag on much more than it needed to…. All to prove a point that he is also a master negotiator. Meanwhile the player himself is stuck in the middle. Doesn’t get to integrate with the team and suffer with the rest of them in pre season training… which we all know can be very bonding. Instead, he will be playing catch up for the better part of three months.
It's mid July, no idea why people even mention this dragging until end of August. It won't, certainly not with us.

I don't necessarily think that midfielders we may be targetting are going to be much better than Maddison. It's just that any home grown player is going to cost proportionally much more than a comparable overseas prospect. By getting Spence at least we are applying the HG "tax" to a smaller purchase price. Maddison would cost us so much more than he is objectively worth, and unlike Boro, Leicester really wouldn't want to sell which will further inflate the price.

We are happy to pay a bit more up front, and have continually increased our front loaded offer over the last few weeks as a compromise negotiation to the ridiculous addons Gibson is set on. I guess it's a case of finding that cash up front tipping point that they'll accept. It's definitely not done as of this morning.

Thanks Trix.

Man this is the most tedious transfer saga ever. I'd have hoped even Gibson would have tired of it by now and caved. Surely they'd rather start focusing on their own incomings!

Quite surprised we haven't moved on by now. I wonder if there's a non-HG midfielder that we really like so we'd rather persist with Spence than go for the foreign RWB and Maddison (or similar) double-up.

If we were to buy Spence, then sell him later on, we would get zilch and Middlesboro would get all of the proceeds, if Gibson gets his way. Is that what you want?

Probably because Maddison and a foreign RWB would cost more then Spence and whoever we are targeting. It’s also been mentioned that Conte isn’t a massive fan of Maddison, or Spence for that matter, but as we still need a HG player In it’s better to spend 20 odd mil on a player the boss isn’t wild about then 60/70 mil. Makes sense.

I’m sure there is a limit to how much we are willing to pay for Spence, and we are probably close to it. Ultimately tho I’m sure it’s in Boro’s best interest if we buy him as well, im sure nobody else is offering what we are offering.
