You cant just sign top players for when your current options "inevitably
He's a fantastic player who has had a poor season by his standards for whatever reason...

I think it's also probably true that when we know a player has one year left and hasn't signed a new contract, we're more prone to unconsciously tend to diminish our view of their performance as emotional protection against them leaving and an unreasonable suspicion that they are less motivated to put in effort

Thank you for phrasing this much better than I could. If you want to say that Eriksen is coming off a poor season, fair enough. Performance may be subjective to a certain extent, but at least you're sticking with an observable data set that everyone else is privy to. But the people who make definitive statements like "his heart obviously wasn't in it" are talking out of their asses, because there's no way for them to know that. There's plenty of possible reasons for his performances to fall: the rest of the midfield being non-existent for long periods of time, a limited summer break/preseason, tons of games played, an unknown injury, or even just the fact that most creative mids are notoriously mercurial and he's no different. It could very well be the contract, of course; but if you're not willing to give someone like Eriksen the benefit of the doubt in a situation like this, then who are you going to give it to?

Eriksen is a guy who, although a very hard worker, has never thrown himself into tackles or generally come across as an all-action kind of midfielder. Is it frustrating at times? Sure. But Kane is the opposite, and look at the criticism he receives when he gets hurt doing the things that Eriksen doesn't. If anything, I wish Kane was a little bit more like Eriksen in that regard.

Eriksen staying with an extended contract would be brilliant news even if some feel he isn’t world class or that Madrid fans would be on his back, the fact is he has made a significant contribution to the team we have become under Poch. We would struggle to fill the void for sure.

I know this has been rehashed again & again here...

I dont believe fans are understating his quality. Its the commitment. He has made the statement he wants fresh challenge and wants to leave. Real question is, if he doesnt get his move, how motivated he is going to be even if he signs some sort of deal ?

This is a season of transition for us when we move from one project to next big project.

I would rather want to move on, rather than us being his reluctant 2nd choice.

If the stories are true that its Levy who is pushing the move to Madrid, then its very clear IMO that even Poch & Levy has given up on him
But you never know...we got Toby playing again after previous season issues. It really comes down to Eriksen's commitment rather than whether he is a creative player or what not...

As you said commitment is key. Despite all the off field contract shenanigans Alderweireld has still produced the goods week in week out. Eriksen on the other hand gave up at Christmas and has been on his holidays since.

Think it's been said many times that if he doesn't get his move, he will sign an extension.

My theory is that Madrid will push to sign him in 12 months time so he will just wait it out. Risky strategy but he’ll have the pick of clubs if he does that and they don’t want him. Shit for us though. That’s what happens when you let contract situations play out like this.

That may of changed?

Now you mentioned it those corners do kinda suck..

In all seriousness this was bound to happen, madrid playing pr perfectly saying they have a different target whilst also getting in Eriksens agents ear that he basically wont get his move as Levy wants too much basically forcing him to play his cards of not agreeing a new deal to lower the price.

Tbh it was an utterly stupid thing for Eriksen to say from a negotiation standpoint. Promising to sign a new deal if the club don't sell you, when you want to leave is a weird comment and really weakens your hand.

So the ball is entirely in his court now... 1 of 3 options now; either:

1. We sell him for a reduced rate now
2. He leaves next year for free (likely continuing from last year's form)
3. He demands a huge pay rise

This is why we try & avoid letting contracts run into the last year. Fingers crossed a solution that suits everyone is sorted soon.

If Madrid genuinely want him, he will end up there for a reasonable fee (quite a bit less than Hazard). If they don’t, he’ll stay and probably sign a new deal. The third way of “Madrid want him but Levy prices him out of a move” was never going to end with a happy player and new contract.

Herc confirming my worst fears there. Contract was always going to be used for leverage. Madrid may well tell him to sit tight for 6 months.

Only hope is Zidane flat out refuses him and he can be convinced to stay. Or alternatively we can somehow get a decent price for him.

I found it weird that he had all the leverage with the contract and seemingly threw it away by offering to sign a new one.

Now Eriksen won’t sign a new contract? He wanted Real and only Real but they don’t want him... what’s changed? He can pack his bags and piss off. We need committed players not a prima donna.

With NDombele and Lo Celso not being subject to Eriksen’s departure then I hope we sign both and freeze Eriksen out if he’s intending on running down his contract.
