Gave the ball away too many times
Yes granted he’s trying something
But needs to be better
And yes lack of mins prolly doesn’t do such a player any good, he strikes me as a someone who needs to feel the game rather than an immediate impact sub (which perisic n solomon proved more effective to be)

all that said, if his shot at the end went in, he would have been vindicated and gained vital confidence. Alas

good to see that he can generate that kind of powerful shots tho

Can we really afford to meet any for players leave in January? Outside of Dier and Lloris I mean.

We’d be losing nothing in selling Gil that the likes of Donley, Santiago or Soonsup-Bell couldn’t produce anyway. We laid out 40+ million in money and assets for a player no better than players we’ve produced for nothing.

@Tucker so you don’t think Donley, Santiago or Soonsup-Bell could produce 1 assist in 3 seasons? That’s an interesting take

I actually thought he did decent. Maybe because it has been years since we played with a left footed winger on the left wing looking to stretch the pitch and stay wide rather than come inside. I think we need to use that more otherwise we get congested in the middle. Gil's problem is as mentioned by everyone else is he is too slight to make the most of his initial bursts with the ball. You can't say he was on the periphery coming on yesterday because a lot of the ball went out to him but lacks the cutting edge in the last bit of an attacking move.

Given we’ve not seen any of them play senior matches for more than four or five minutes, it’s pure hyperbole to say they’d do better than Gil. You have no idea if they would or not. They are still kids, and would likely suffer from the same physical limitations that Bryan does.

Exactly this. Nobody knows what the three are capable of in the pl so that argument doesn’t really hold weight at the moment. They could quite possibly be worse, maybe they could also be better. Ultimately Ange is the one who sees them train every day and he doesn’t strike me as the sentimental type. If he thinks Santiago say is at a higher level then Gil im sure he’d play him over Bryan.

Ange will have to rotate some of our front three this Sunday with so little time between games and who knows, maybe one of them will be ahead of Gil now. But if they are still behind Gil in the pecking order, which they have been all season, then to me its a good indicator of where their ability is in comparison currently.

Here’s the thing, I feel like Gil’s level of play is no further developed than the usual kid we throw in for an opportunity. The difference is he’s 23 in a couple months, he should be way further along than he is. Santiago and Soonsup-Bell are debatable but Donley is technically excellent, has high football IQ and is also a fairly well built young lad. I’d fancy his chances of having a bigger impact than Gil. He’s not a winger though unfortunately, so them competing for a place in the team isn’t a thing.

He was appalling last night - i was so pleased when we signed him and wanted to see him have his chance as I was convinced he would come good! I saw him as a David silva type of player now I see him as a bang average player who is still labelled youth with potential but is not actually a youth player anymore

David Silva. I think you set him a high bar there.

I said type player not the next coming

however he is not a top flight player - not sure he is that good even in the Spanish league but when we signed him there was a lot of hype about him

Bit of a conundrum with him going forward. I know the general consensus seems to be he isn’t good enough full stop, which I can understand. Personally I haven’t given up on him completely and would like to see him continue to get minutes, I actually would even quite like him to start on Friday. But the reality is, now we have Solomon coming back and look to be going for Jota on loan is their point keeping him.

What I think has been really detrimental for his development is over the last two seasons he has been kept at the club for two half seasons with little to no first team football. Not only that when he did go on loan he went back to Spain, a league he is very comfortable in. Whilst winning the Europa league must have been excellent for him in general I can’t help but feel we have handled his development really poorly. He really hasn’t ever had a proper chance to adapt to the PL. Even a loan to a different European league I feel would have been more beneficial then two loans back to Spain, his comfort zone.

With that in mind, if we do bring in another WF I feel like sending him out on loan, ideally to a PL club, would be the best idea for both parties. I just think if he stays his already very limited minutes will be even more reduced, probably only in a few cup games assuming we don’t go out any time soon. Ultimately keeping him and not playing him frequently will not help him develop and only further reduce his value if we do eventually decide to cash in on him.

Should never have been bought in the first place.

Well yeah we should have got Kvaratskhelia who Paratici also wanted. Passing on him when it was “almost done” according to Leonid Slutsky, Ruben Kazan’s manager at the time, was a monumental error. But now that we actually have Gil we can’t keep him on the bench collecting dust.

I’m not sure who would actually be able to afford whatever value we would place in his head this window so our best bet is surely to find a good loan for him. Of course if we don’t bring in another WF then he probably has to stay just due to numbers but it isn’t ideal if he only picking up the odd 10/15 mins here and there.

I think we should sell him. With respect, he's not going to get the game time he needs to improve, so if there are any suitors now, we should sell. Worst case, loan.

But he clearly won't play, in particular with Solomon coming back. So best for all parties to part ways
