During Poch's strongest period we relied on Walker and Rose to get up and down the flanks all game long. It's a role that very few can do at that intensity.

So having Davies and Trippier as back ups didn't seem to quite fit.

I have come to accept that the days of having two full backs like Rose and Walker happen very rarely and we are unlikely to replicate.

Davies does well for Wales in the left side of a back three and is doing so for us now.

Oh so unspectacular players are only reserved for certain roles, gotcha. ?

Also Jose hasn't been playing him as a wing back, he's been playing him as a 3CB which suits him more.
Don't let others call him a LB then.

Also: i rate Henderson as a tenacious defensive animal of a player.

Yeah, so glad we are seeing him attacking again.
The one sided attack was driving me mad.

Seems we’ve abandoned that the last couple of matches, which has benefited both full backs as Davies has been able to show that he can offer an attacking outlet while Aurier has not been got at as much and also hasn’t had so much pressure to be an attacking force, useful when he’s not that good at it.

I posted this in February 2017 and my opinion hasn't changed:

Davies - good defender (when protected and not up against raw pace), but a weak attacker.

Reckon he'd do quite well as the left sided CB in a three man defence. But I can't wait for Rose to be fit.

What are people's thoughts about the left-back situation going into the summer transfer window? I think most people would agree Davies is a good squad player to have around, especially as the left-sided player in a three man CB defence. But whether he (or Sessegnon) are good enough options to be first choice is another matter entirely.

People often point to Eriksen's loss of form/interest and subsequent departure as a reason for our lack of creativity, but a lack of real attacking support from full-back is a huge factor. Liverpool don't play with a traditional playmaker but create so much because of Robertson and TAA bombing up the pitch at pace. If we're able to get a new DM in then it allows players like Lo Celso to push a little further forward, but we'll still need some more pace from out wide to really make this work. We all miss the good ol' days of having Rose and Walker, but going further back we played some really good football at times with Stephen Carr, Christian Ziege, even Benoit Assou-Ekotto getting up the pitch and supporting the attacks.

Does anyone feel confident going into another season with Davies as a starter?

We played some of our best football on 2016/17 with Davies as left wing back as Rose was injured.

He night bit be quickest but to say he can’t attack is wrong as he has shown he is capable of putting some lovely crosses in.

We do need an alternative though as obviously need cover for all positions, be that Sessegnon, Cirkin or a new signing.

Been very solid lately. Not spectacular but lb not a priority

I think Ben is a nice lad who won’t cause any problems and will give 100% etc but I don’t rate him as a FB any more than I rate Aurier

Although Palaces goal was a shitshow from Sissoko losing possession near their area to Aurier needlessly giving away a corner followed by Dier not challenging for the header across our goal the biggest culprit for me was Ben not marking anyone when the ball came across which wasn’t the first time this season

As I mentioned on the match thread we need to offload Davies, Aurier, Winks and Sissoko in the close season

Davies was the worst starter in that team though. Now that the squad has deteriorated he sticks out more.

In the current role as a ‘tucked in’ FB he is fine, but when asked to get forward his lack of pace and ability to beat a man really stand out like a sore thumb. He can put in a decent delivery, but he is all too rarely able to manufacture the opportunity to get a cross off. He’s a limited player but one who follows the instructions, seems to have decent footballing IQ and is clearly someone Jose trusts. To say he is championship level is insulting.

If he is to remain in this role then we need a significant upgrade at the other FB position, as one of the FBs needs to be able to contribute to our attacking play
