I’ve seen a lot of these posts about how it can’t be a move to force Betis hand because Dybala is more expensive. Haven’t reached end of thread yet so don’t know if it’s been addressed, but have to disagree entirely with that notion ...
It’s not like our stance on prices is based entirely on convincing a team how much or how little money we have in our piggy bank.
We have a figure we believe that Lo Celso is worth. We aren’t willing to budge much beyond that. We have a figure that we believe Dybala is worth and it’s probably more than Lo Celso for a variety of reasons. Betis don’t have to believe we have no money left in some silly hoodwinking manoeuvre, they just have to know how much we think the player is worth and how strong we are that we won’t bend on that front. And that now we have identified a player we believe to be available and may now use all that money on him instead of Lo Celso.
I’m not suggesting Dybala is purely an effort to put pressure on Betis, however, wanted to dispel the notion that he couldn’t be because he cost more.
I was going to make the same point. It's all about what we're prepared to pay for the player, not how much money we have in the bank. If it was just about how much money we have Betis would just point to our annual financial report and we'd have paid the amount they wanted already.
This still feels like a strange link as an alternative to Lo Celso to me, but maybe that's just because I don't know enough about either player and how their skill-sets compare.
Just feels like one of those ones where, if he’s available, a bigger fish comes along. But then it felt like that with Ndombele and I don’t think any club has as big a draw as Poch right now.
Fuck knows.
True, but there aren't that many fish that are bigger these days. We were 10th on the Deloitte Money League this year and you can probably rule out half the teams above us for this transfer based on their needs and current squad make-up. Like you say Poch is a big draw and we could probably match his current wages so deals like this one aren't as fanciful as they were even a year ago.
