Former Nottingham Forest and Barnsley boss Hart has left Fratton Park with Pompey at the foot of the Premier League table, after taking just seven points from 13 matches.
They were beaten 1-0 at Stoke on Sunday and are four points adrift of safety, ahead of this weekend's clash with Manchester United.
Former Chelsea manager Grant joined Portsmouth as director of football last month but it is understood he is not a candidate to succeed Hart as manager.
Coaches Paul Groves and Ian Woan have taken temporary charge of the first team.
Portsmouth said in a statement that Hart was "relieved of his duties", and stressed the decision was taken "reluctantly" and on the basis of recent results.
The club said Hart turned down the role of technical director, with responsibility for players aged 18 to 21.
Portsmouth chief executive Peter Storrie told the club website: "Paul has worked under very difficult circumstances with the financial restrictions the club has faced since he took over.
"However, the board feels that the team should have accrued more points to date and that we need a new man in charge to ensure Premier League survival.
"The board would like to thank Paul for his work not only in keeping the club in the Premier League last season but also for his time in charge of youth development.
"Paul is a man of great dignity and we hoped he would stay and help us develop younger players on the fringes of the first team.
We are genuinely sad to see him leave. Everyone at the club wishes him well for the future."

I looked at him at the weekend when Pompey lost to Stoke - He looked like a dead man walking after Boateng missed the penalty.

wasn't really dealt a good hand. I genuinely feel bad for him. Dodgy ownership. A transfer embargo. Squad sold from underneath him. Hopefully we see him in some compacity again.

Grant to show us all what an excellent manager he is by keeping Portsmouth up.

Be a miracle if they stay up. Grant probably isn't as bad as some would think. The world of football has an awfully big microscope on it for someone with no talent or skill to make it on such a big platform (Unless you are Theo Walcott).

Maybe Ramos will take charge and show us all that he could in fact have turned it round.

it'll be darren fegurson

any established manager would steer well away from that sham of a club and he'll just want a chance to prove himself at the highest level

Sounds like a decent shout.

He was being heavily touted as having already agreed to take over Hull...it was certianly suggested by the likes of Barry Fry that he had a new job in principal (prem league club at that)

I wouldn't be at all suprised to find out he was lined up to take over the pompey job as and when they lost again. Still I'd say that Grant remains a slight favourite being already involved at Pompey.

Souness will take anything he can get. But expect Avram to take control at least until the end of the season.

Avram Grant looks like he'll get it, and I'd tip him to keep them up. They've been unlucky this year, and have deserved more points.

Poor decision. Pompey have played some good football, havent really be thrashed, and should have more points. Given the theatrics in the boardroom, they should have given Hart a better chance to get them out of trouble.

However I do not think Hart helped himself out. It can be as much about perception as anything, especially to get that extra game or two where a win keeps you in the job. He looked miserable, resigned to whatever happened in the games, and his attitude of 'we played well, but didnt get any luck' doesnt give the impression that he will really turn things around. Sad to say, if he had given a referee a rollocking or two, then he might still be in the job, for a week longer at least

Terrible decision .

With Paul Hart they probably stood a 50% chance of staying up .

Short of a really savvy operator like Tony Pulis I can't see them doing even as well .

Doubt they will even feel a new manager bounce to offset the instability .

Unfortunately, Dindane (the Lavatory Man) and Piquionne seem to be the kind of striker who can do everything but stick the ball in the back of the net on a regular basis, and Kanu (who must qualify for free false teeth soon) looks finally to be past his sell-by date. By the time January comes it's liable to be too late to find decent replacements.
