That isn't true at all, it’s as different as French and English.
Portuguese and Spanish have a lexical similarity of almost 90%. This means that both languages have words that are found in equivalent forms. The 2 languages have a high proportion of cognates, which are words that have the same roots and correspond to each other. Much of the vocabulary is shared.

They're the only club that make us look moderately sane. Except they have loads of dosh

Boehly has spaffed their transfer budget on a ludicrous splurge. Only way they get money in is to flog players off, but if they lose money on them it makes the FFP figures even worse.

Mate are you just guessing that lol
No, my mate was born in Brazil to a Brazilian Mother and Chilean father and she leant both languages growing up, as her Father didn't speak Portuguese. He (the Father) eventually became fluent, so all of them now converse in Portuguese. Since it has now been about 20 years since my mate has needed to speak Spanish, she really struggles with it now. She is the one that told me they are very different languages (tbf she didn't say as different as English and French).

It's good to see that the vast majority in here are looking at the next coach with different eyes compared to previous occasions.

Even big names like Luis Enrique are getting turned down by most because they see that we need someone who is gonna be brave, bold bald and build rather another coach to just come in for a couple of years do ok and then leave
Fixed ;)

At the risk of getting another off-topic rating from @elfy, the issue with mutual intelligibility between Brazilian Portuguese and Chilean Spanish might be due to accents/pronunciations/dialects and the speed at which the languages are spoken.

Even Brazilians and Portuguese nationals speak Portuguese differently.

You can bet your life that some of these people championing Enrique are currently moaning about us playing the ball around the back all the time..

..and would moan when we keep playing the ball around the midfield all the time if he became manager!
I have absolutely no issues with us keeping the ball. If we have the ball other teams cannot score. Our biggest problem is we are over run and don't keep the ball enough.

Most, younger, Portuguese do speak Spanish. Just as they speak English. But the languages are not very alike. The reasoning it actually quite interesting as well. When Europe was sorting itself out in country borders, the Portuguese were very much "this is ours, we're having it". Most other Western and Southern mainland Europe countries spent a lot longer sorting out their borders. What that means is that Portuguese grew as a language a lot more independently than others. In fact, in many cases French, Italian and even German can be closer to Spanish. Of course there are similarities like there are in many languages, but it is much further removed from Spanish than you would expect.

As for Portuguese v Brazilian Portuguese, they are of course almost the same language. But with dialectal differences. As far as words go, there are differences sometimes. But really it is how the language is spoken. Brazilians sing the language, and Portuguese murmur it. A Portuguese person can understand a Brazilian much better than a Brazilian can understand a Portuguese for that reason. The Portuguese skip over vowels very quickly, and don't fully open their mouth. It's actually close to Russian in that way.

Sorry, that was off topic, but I needed to get it off my chest. So, I don't want Rodgers because I don't like him. But I also admit it he would be a better appointment than Nuno, and a better fit than Conte. Slot or Gallardo remain at the front for me.

In other news an email has been leaked alleging PSG manager Christophe Galtier complained about too many black and Muslim players whilst at Nice

Haven't watched as ..well no more language talk , but all the usual sites are talking about it.

I asked my Portuguese colleague about it a while ago and she said it wasn't easy for her (to understand Spanish).

Or, maybe create a thread to discuss the vagaries of language and not keep spamming this one.....

I get sometimes people can go off on a tangent somewhat related to matters, but where the fuck is Portuguese Spanish related to anything here 🤣
