Magpies and Spurs both looking to keep up impressive recent formSomething will have to give at St James' Park as Newcastle host another in-form side in the shape of Tottenham.

Newcastle are fourth and remain unbeaten after seven Premier League games while sixth-placed Spurs have won their last four, and Sunday's showdown is live on Sky Sports HD1.

The Magpies have been something of a surprise package so far as although they were title contenders in the Premier League's early years, they haven't finished in the top five since 2004.

And only the most optimistic members of the Toon Army will have expected them to have started the season so promisingly given the financial restraints placed on manager Alan Pardew.

Despite the departure of influential midfielders Kevin Nolan and Joey Barton

in the summer, Pardew's modest signings look to have improved his side, conceding just four goals (fewer than any other side in the Premier League) while Demba Ba is now up and running having scored four in the last two.
Spurs have established themselves as leading contenders in recent years, claiming one of the UEFA Champions League places previously enjoyed by Newcastle in 2010, but another Champions League challenge this season looked a forlorn hope after convincing defeats by Manchester United and City in their opening two games.

Results since have shown that few teams will live with the Manchester rivals this season and that a major factor in Tottenham's disappointing start was the transfer saga surrounding Luka Modric.

Harry Redknapp's men now look to have put that behind them, with the Croatia
spacer.gif
playmaker getting back near his best, scoring a superb opener in the 4-0 home win over Liverpool.

On-loan striker Emmanuel Adebayor bagged a brace in that game and subsequent wins over Wigan and then derby rivals Arsenal

last time out have maintained the feel-good factor at White Hart Lane.

History is not on Tottenham's side as they head to the north east, though, with Spurs having not won a Premier League game on Tyneside since August 2004.
Team news

Pardew could name an unchanged line-up for unbeaten Newcastle.
Shola Ameobi

(shoulder) is close to coming back into first-team contention but the Magpies remain without Alan Smith (hamstring), Haris Vuckic (hand) and Mike Williamson (broken arm).

Tottenham will give a fitness test to Adebayor after he suffered a hamstring injury in the win over Arsenal two weeks ago.

Rafael van der Vaart (hamstring) should be fit but Sandro (calf) and Aaron Lennon (groin) are doubtful, while Niko Kranjcar is likely to be out for some time after tearing a thigh muscle on international duty with Croatia.

Vedran Corluka also suffered a foot injury with Croatia and joins long-term absentees William Gallas (calf), Michael Dawson (Achilles) and Tom Huddlestone (ankle) on the sidelines.

Newcastle pair Demba Ba and Yohan Cabaye are fit for Sunday's game despite reportedly suffering injuries on international duty.

Danny Guthrie and Sammy Ameobi are doubts with respective groin and hamstring problems.

Tottenham's Vedran Corluka and Niko Kranjcar have been ruled out with foot and thigh injuries respectively.

There are doubts over Emmanuel Adebayor (hamstring), Aaron Lennon (groin) and Sandro (calf).

This should be a cracker as two of the most in-form teams in the country meet at St James' Park, with both clubs having a reputation for attacking, "devil may care" football.

That said, this is a Newcastle that isn't quite so gung ho about its business these days, having conceded fewer goals than any other team in the Premier League this season.

Alan Pardew's attention to defensive detail is one of the key factors behind the Toon's impressive unbeaten start, with only Nottingham Forest in the Carling Cup scoring more than one goal against them in a game.

Wolves should have done a fortnight ago, but the luck with refereeing decisions that Newcastle enjoyed at Molineux shouldn't detract from their best start to a season since 1994.

Spurs come north looking for a fifth league win in a row, with their 2-1 defeat of Arsenal last time out providing one of the most entertaining games of the season so far. The last time they completed a nap hand of victories was in their march to a Champions League place in the spring of 2010, with the run ending in the north east at Sunderland.

Newcastle hasn't been any kinder to them in recent years. Aaron Lennon's late equaliser in this fixture in January won Spurs their only point in their last five league games on Tyneside.

I would think Harry Redknapp would be pleased enough with another point from the place he could have gone to in 2008. The same goes for Pardew against one of his old clubs. How many remember his four Intertoto Cup games for Spurs in 1995?

Head-to-head

  • Tottenham haven't won on their last five league visits to St James' Park.
  • The teams shared a thrilling 4-4 draw on the only other occasion they have met on 16 October - that was also at St James' Park, back in 1954, and the line-ups that day included Jackie Milburn and Bill Nicholson.
Newcastle

  • Newcastle are unbeaten in their last 10 Premier League matches - their longest such run since 1997.
  • The Magpies have conceded just four goals in this season's Premier League, the fewest in the top flight.
  • Newcastle have more than twice as many points as they had at this stage last season (15:7).
  • Demba Ba has scored four goals in his last two Premier League matches.
Tottenham

  • After losing their first two league matches, Tottenham have won their last four.
  • Tottenham have won their last two Premier League away matches. They have not won three in a row on their travels since December 2004.
  • Spurs are the only side in the top half of the table not to have drawn a match this season. Bolton are the only other club without a draw.
  • Ledley King could make his 300th start for Tottenham. Spurs are unbeaten with him in the side this season (four wins). They have lost both matches where he has been absent. King has been on the winning side in his last eight Premier League matches.

confident depending on how we line up.

Same. Will feel really up for it if I see Adebayor starting, a bit more cautious if not. Defoe up top on his own doesn't fill me with great confidence at all, still yet to see him link well with VDV. Actually thought the pair looked lively in the short period at Villa last season before Defoe's sending off but have been next to signs of a good partnership after that.

confident depending on how we line up.

Yep same, dependent on two things:

1) injury news;
2) and how Harry sets up as a result, or how he sets up regardless come to think of it.

If Adebayor and Sandro both start and we go 4-2-3-1 I'll be bloody confident.

Not confident but hopeful. If we can muster a result with our injury problems at a place we v seldom win, it could bode v well for the rest of the season.

I agree. We have to play either Sandro and Parker or Livermore and parker. Their midfield is their strongest area and if we allow them to win that battle, as we did against the scum, they, unlike the scum, will punish us.

Harry obviously is aware of the strength of Sandro and Parker in there as he has spoken about it several times, but he still seems to believe in Defoe so much that he is prepared to sacrifice that strength. If we dont have the ball the extra striker is pointless and besides which vdv contributes just as many goals but with the added bonus of better ball retention and assists.

4-2-3-1 for me. As others have mentioned they're a physically strong side especially in midfield. Parker and sandro/livermore infront of the defence for me, would make us extremely hard to breakdown for their fairly imobile forwards.

It wont be popular but personally if Ade isnt available I would consider Kane with vdv playing off of him. I just think that whilst defoe offers more technical abillity Harry could offer a much more physical threat hopefully allowing rafa to do the business. Its a definate away set up some could argue negative but I think a good chance of getting something.

Unlike the reports above I can see a really closed choppy game with either team winning 1-0 or a 1-1 draw

Please forgive me as I just woke up and started to read the pre-match stuff here. Check this:

"Spurs have established themselves as leading contenders in recent years, claiming one of the UEFA Champions League places previously enjoyed by Newcastle in 2010,..."

I just copied this from the match thread initial post. Newcastle were in the Championship in 2010, not the Champions' League,... sleepy here, but did I miss something?

Oh wait, they meant, "Spurs have established themselves as leading contenders in recent years, claiming one of the UEFA Champions League places in 2010, previously enjoyed by Newcastle in 2002."

got it... :sleepy:
They also won the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup in 1969,... so what?...

Feeling confident today as well, on the front foot lads... COYS!!!!

Big test today and not normally a place I feel confident but think we have too much for them.

A two goal margin win would take us to 4th with a game in hand. I'd be absolutely chuffed with that after our start to the season.

With Adebayor and Sandro I'd expect a win, without them I'd probably take a draw. I think after 4 wins a draw will be a respectable result. Then we can get back to winning ways at home next weekend. I'm not too nervous, going to be an enjoyable open game I hope.

The team and formation should pick itself. If we line ip in a 4-4-2 as we did against Arsenal, I will shit a jihad.

It sucks for Defoe as he has upped his work rate and performance from last season, but we have to play the strongest team and the most effective formation which, unfortunately for JD, means only having one up front.

Ade trained yesterday and is a chance but may be worth a gamble.

Sandro didnt train and is less likely as he could play but it could put him out for longer.

So no ITK as to whether or not Ade or Sandro are fit to start?

Edit.

As if by magic.

not good news. 2 proper players who bring alot to team. i really cant see us grinding out win without them. ball will keep coming back if defoe up on his own.

and all this talk of workrate from defoe not bashing but i just dont see it.
will be interesting team sheet to say least. win today would be massive

I think Bale is slowing starting to find the form of the first half of last season and after his performance for Wales in midweek I feel he is going to tear Simpson a new one.
