That looks like "piling" (?) to keep the soil in place where they have dug down for the sliding pitch's resting place under the new south stand.
Not sure if that's the right terminology.:cautious:

Any guesses as to why they've fenced off that area below south west corner webcam?

Yup, sheet piling. Basically allows you to dig a hole on one side without the other side falling in on top of you! Based on its location I would actually guess it's been put in to allow the digging of the foundations for the southern part of the new West Stand which was being held back by the existing West Stand. I don't think the sliding pitch needs much in the way of foundations as I think it's pretty much just rolling in and out on top of what's already there. There's inevitably more to it, but I can't see much digging down required other than maybe a couple of feet.

Ok thanks for that. It appears to be a couple of feet atm.
I'm sure the old pitch has more removal needed to facilitate the NFL pitch, but not sure how low it needs to be in relation to the seating.(Believe 9 feet or something similar was quoted) The sliding football pitch will need to sit on top of that and slide under the new South Stand when not in use ie: concerts, NFL, etc.
This same area I think will be a carpark or similar when the sliding pitch is in football situation in the new stadium.
I'm not sure of the levels for each area so I could be wrong or right.

If you look at some of the pictures of the new west stand you can see the drop from the seating to where the ground is. There was a van parked there that didn't come even half way up.

What's been dug out looks to be on the near-side (from the camera's perspective) which is where the stand will be. Pitch side is the far side which is still at ground level.

There may be some digging out required, but they aren't building a basement for the pitch and I am pretty certain there's no car parking there... although there may be some below where the pitch will be stored, but I must admit it's been a while since I've studied the plans.

Certainly the NFL pitch will be some way below the level of the bottom seats, which are positioned with eyelines for the football pitch on top. However, as you say, that will mean some digging down.

Maybe I'll have another look at the plans tonight.

Where will they put that roof support when it's lifted out? Spin 90 degrees, or move entirely into empty middle space? I'm totally addicted to watching the roof support progress

I am quite happy with having shiny new stadium all ready to go amid great fanfare and all the extra features but just an observation - that last ariel shot shows you how close we would have been to being able to play in a 3-side stadium for a year (assuming no sliding pitch, NFL etc.)

Bit of patience needed. Much rather we moved into the finished product.
