See, this subject has come up a few times in the past on the forums; the decline into almost extinction of the footballer's 'tache.

Back in the day, when i were a lad, etc. moustaches were a big part of the game, all the best players had them. Well, the most stylish, anyway, best is maybe a bit generous.

Liverpool were perhaps most renowned for their facial furniture, with former greats such as Graeme Souness, Ian Rush & Bruce Grobbelaar

Sadly, for the Mighty Spurs, by 1981 the entire squads facial hair had all washed upstream in the post-match bath, and formed a community on Ricky Villa's face

The last player to sport a top lip warmer of any real note for his country was Mr David Seaman:

But today the Daily Mail (yeah, i clicked it by accident after seeing "Moustache" and "Football" in the same headline on Newsnow), load of toss that it is, dug up a pic of Ballack sporting a rather finely groomed gentlemans nose fringe for an advert:

Are we on the verge of a resurgance in bushy mushed defenders and silky-skilled/fuzzy-faced strikers? Was it just coincidence that the lip-browed were so successful, or does football and the tail of Sampson hold more weight than we ever imagined?

please, the great unwashed, opine now...

Couldn´t care less how they look, the important thing is the football they play, thou have to say that I actually would myself easily do like our own Ricky Villa and have it all than just that silly little mustache the others are spouting... and anybody know what on earth Ballack might be doing commercial for looking like that???

COYS!

I suggest the cheats of football e.g. Ashley Cole, Robbie Savage, etc have the following moustache, typpical of the evil fiend:

So then they can 'twizzle' it and laugh wildly when they get someone needlessly sent off.

it saddens me that such an important tradition in our national game has been lost.

i'm not bothered about other teams, but they should impose a rule that forces the whole liverpool side to sport huge gentlemen's back-scratchers like souness's.

Oh, that is a gem! How can Mr Gerrard not have realised how his face was carved for a basil? That's something quite superb, right there

And Tryph, yeah, i fully agree
