Exactly the type of player we should be targeting and trying to sign......

http://www.metro.co.uk/sport/footba...rgeted-by-spurs-and-manchester-united#Scene_1

The left-sided Lyon star has been valued at around £22 million and could be on his way to the Premier League this month after turning down a move to Juventus.

The 27-year-old has attracted considerable attention across Europe due to his impressive form for Lyon.

Bastos was also named in Brazil’s 23-man squad for the World Cup in South Africa last summer.

In his 47 appearances for Lyon, Bastos has scored 12 times, and once during his ten games for Brazil.

Reports suggest that despite only joining Lyon in 2009, for £16 million, the midfielder could be tempted to leave if the right offer is made.

Manchester United and Spurs are both said to be interested in bolstering their squads with left-sided players this month.

Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp apparently tried to sign Bastos in the summer but he was unable to convince the midfielder to leave Lyon.

However, given Spurs’ superb season thus far and their form in the Champions League, he may stand a much better chance in signing the 27-year-old this time round.

Well, according to Metro (or rather, whoever they've swiped this from) we've been doing just that.

I'm sure he'd be a huge improvement on Bale and Modric, so let's go get him!

Would be cover for both Bale and BAE who have pretty much played in all our games this season. Bale needs to be rested now and then as does Disco Benny imho....

Yes, sure, he can't wait to join Spurs' bench and play the occasional game when Bale needs rest!

Very good LB as well, I think he started every game for Brazil at the WC at LB. Put in some good performances. Better than Ekotto.

No he can play both LB and LM hence will be playing pretty much every week besides I think he could very easily make the LB position his very own....

He'd be a great signing but I can't see Levy spending £20 plus million on a left back.

£20mil is too much especially for a player that's not PL proven + the age as well...

Age? He's 27, in his prime. He's got a good 5 years left at the highest level.

Plus he plays for a team that's got a recent history of winning the league consistently /doing well in the champs league.

Drogba and Essien both came to the prem from France ... look at their transfer fees! Their oustanding players.

What do you bases that opinion on? Just because he played for Brazil? Gilberto was 2nd choice LB and also had a rew minutes in the WC.
Bastos does not play as LB as Lyon, and hasn't done so in many seasons. He was more of a wing-back for Brazil and only did so because 1st & 2nd choices (Filipe Luis, Andre Cruz) were both injured. And playing for Brazil in the WC is a totally different setting than playing for Spurs in the EPL. He did ok as a LB but nothing special either.
And he's not coming to Spurs to spend time on the bench.

He wont be good enough as a left back in the Premier League. Plus a combination of Bale and Bastos wouldn't work too well imo. I'd rather we got a more defensive left back to cover Ekotto. Attacking fullbacks and wide wingers dont work too well as a combination. It can only work effectively if the wide players play in from the wings, like Messi and Villa for Barca for example. Bale and Lennon are at their best on the outside, and an attacking fullback wont suit that style.

Whilst i do think he's a very good player. £22million on a left back/cover for left wing is not where I think we should be focusing our attention at the moment.

All paper talk at the moment anyway.

This was sarcasm right? Cos as much as I like him, he's not better than Bale or Modric.....maybe equally as good on his day but not better....not at all.

I don't really like him at left back but if we were to sign him then him and Bale together down our left flank could be devastating

Average player, IMO not as good as Ekotto or Bale... 22 Million on a 27 yo overrated brasillian who we do not need.

No chance!

If you are playing FM then perhaps worth a purchase.

Has been in decent form this season, but overall was fairly average last season. He's really poor at left back, which isn't his position at all.

If Bale is capable of playing on the right, we could be like Bayern Munich and play 2 wrong-footed wingers that are capable of scoring goals. Lennon has improved at it, but not as good at it as Bastos. Of course, this is just a shot in the dark idea by me.

Guys, I see most are talking about Bastos as a LB. Well, I don't know the last time he played LB for Lyon.

When he has been playing for Lyon this season it has primarily been on the RIGHT side of MIDFIELD in a 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3.

Not quite sure Brazilians can cut it for PL. We are lucky Gomes turned out fine but it might not be the same for another.
