Right now in Poland we’re listening very closely to what’s happening at Barca. Depay will definitely leave, so he can free number 9 shirt (it’s not that easy in Spain to change numbers as in England like with Ronaldo and Cavani). According to Gerard Romero who appeared on Polish sports channels, they’re trying to sell Depay to us. So it can be that all the talk comes from Barca sources, or we really took the bait. 14 mil pounds is only a bit more than what we’re paying for Spence.

Tremendous player and smart - there’s an interesting article I remember about his agent looking for the right place for him after United, and Lyon turned out to be that. It suggests a player with more of an idea of what works rather than a crapshoot.

Is he better than bergwijn who we just sold? Idk..
To be fair, I don’t think we were thrilled to be losing Bergwijn. It was more for the sake of his career. If Depay is as good, and is happy sitting as about 5th choice for the attacking positions, it would be worth doing imo.

Would love to be a fly on van gaals wall after his comments supporting bergwijn leaving for regular football only to see his number 1 striker come to be a rotation option
TBH, he's probably got more chance of getting minutes here than at Barca, where he will have Lewandowski, Raphinha, Ansu Fati, Dembele, Ferran Torres, Aubameyang and possibly still Braithwaite to contend with. He needs to leave for his own good, and I'm not sure there'll be many top teams that will want him as 1st choice.

I do honestly not want to swap Lucas for Memphis. Think Lucas can be important for team chemistry and is just very much integrated here. And I am honestly happy to have him as fifth/sixth choice in attack.
Imagine Lucas reading this post.

‘Don’t want to swap Lucas for Memphis’ - Ah thanks man.

‘Lucas important for team chemistry’ - Ah that’s a nice thing to say about me

‘Very much integrated here’ - Yes, yes I am.

‘Honestly happy to have him as 5th/6th choice striker’…. - WTF MAN!

He is basically an older Bergwijn. Not worth it

he’s nothing like Bergwijn. One scores goals and the other can’t hit a barn door.

Depay

Lyon

5 in 18
22 in 51
12 in 47
15 in 22
22 in 40

Barca
13 in 38

Bergwijn

PSV

2 in 33
8 in 36
15 in 41
6 in 29

Spurs

3 in 16
1 in 35
4 in 32

Bergwijn had one good season at PSV and flopped at Spurs. Whereas Depay produced a good goal return at Lyon and scored 13 in a very poor Barca team last season.

There’s no comparison between them. As an experienced International I would have Depay over Bergwijn every day of the week. I can’t fathom how anyone would class Depay as basically Bergwijn MK2 when the latter only scored 8 goals across 3 seasons.

He might not be first choice, but I feel it worth remembering he only started 20 la liga games for Barca last season, the other 8 were subbed on.

Still hit 12 goals in league. 13 in total to share joint top scorer with Aubamayang.

Prolific...no, but Barca have been somewhat shambolic as a whole of late, so I don't place too much emphasis on any players exploits there recently.

Circa £14m could actually be an absolute bargain.

If we can afford him then why not, it’s more squad depth and I’d arguably prefer him than Lucas if we could move him on

We can't be turning our nose up to Depay if we have the opportunity to sign him. Is unthinkable from some of our fans. Can never know if Lucas may suddenly leave for some clubs making a late bid too.

I don't see this, not only from a spurs perspective, no chance he starts ahead of Kane, son, deki and richarlison. So, 5th choice, 6th if maddison is brought in.

Also from depays, he's 29 and he would probably play less than he did at Barca.

Wages will be high and he's not that good. Sounds like an opportunistic buy, yes he's cheap, but he's cheap for a reason.

It's a hard no from me. I am firmly in the Maddison camp as our final attacking option.

He probably read it and asked for the vacant RWB spot. Truth hurts ;)

Apparently he doesn't want to come back to the premier league so that would appear to rule it out.

… but is he homegrown or Association trained?

I don't know if this post was tongue in cheek but in case it isn't, there is a lovely graphic that shows we're actually good on AT/CT for the league.

I understand the reservations about someone like Depay but at Man United that was a while back and since then he has developed somewhat. I mean he can do a job when it comes to things like cup games etc which would then rest the likes of Kane and Son and Kulu for the bigger more important games.

That is how I see things - we get players who can play the games that wouldnt need a Kane/Son/Kulu so that in the league and CL we can use our main front three.

I agree with the principles, I just think there’s better out there that could do the same job.

Thank heavens for that. He was shit at United.... failed... was moved on... I hope it's just paper talk and no more.

That was 5 years ago and United were a clown show.

He's been consistently very good since at CL level, and besides De Bruyne "failed" at Chelsea.

If his expectation of minutes meets reality, and won't upset squad harmony, then on pure ability it's a no brainer.

Quality player. Better than every AM we've had bar Son, Eriksen, and Kulusevski, and has the ability to come on and beat a low block.

Maddison is a better fit, but probably £50m more expensive.

If we were able to get both, shunt Lucas out to RWB, and sell or loan Emerson/Doherty - then we'd be lethal up front across all 4 competitions.

Depth and quality everywhere. This is how we win trophies. Especially with a mid season World Cup and 5 sub rule.
