Well, I bet 90% of sporting directors thinks the same. And 99,99% thinks the same particularly about this window.
Mindset is the difference between a winner and a loser. Hitchin had the look of a man that was already defeated and had his excuse prepared. I hope we can genuinely start focussing on the summer soon and get everything in place to do good early business.

Here’s what I think about dof. I think that when we don’t have one everyone thinks hiring one will save us. When we do everyone wants to fire the person and move power to the manager. I fully believe in the too many cooks analogy and ultimately think hiring one is a diversion at best.

The problem is that it seems at bug clubs in Euopre the DoF is really the chairman's guy by and large but I would want the to be working with manager predominantly.
Steve Hitchen's role really isn't that clearly defined but we do know that he is highly thought of.

It seems like the perfect environment to have a really good scouting system or DoF or whatever you want to call it. If Levy thinks that Hitchen is the one that can do that fine but if his role is slightly different I see no issue in bringing in a Campos or similar. Having said that does Daneil feels like he would have to surrender some involvement if he hired him ?

I think it's clear we're going to need a rebuild and though Levy should brace himself to take losses on certain players, he can certainly try and balance things out by hiring Luis Campos, who has a history of finding excellent players for relatively cheap prices. Add in the strain that COVID is placing on many teams financially, we could actually come out a potential rebuild acquiring some really talented players without overly impacting our own finances. We need a plan and we need the right type of person to oversee it. Campos fits the bill for me and I only hope we sound him out before he takes his talents elsewhere.

Isn’t he mates with Jose?

Unfortunately it’s far too fucking obvious for it to happen. Hitchin has his feet under the table and levy doesn’t have a clue how to run the football side of a club despite trying for 20 years.

But that's a debate for another thread.....

Thing is that unless Daniel Levy is willing to apportion a decent level of autonomy to a DoF then I think that it's a waste of time.

Lille are currently top of the table. If there’s any chance of getting Campos we should.

We can change the manager, and almost certainly should, but without getting the transfers right we’ll always struggle.

There was no better time to bring him in last summer while his mate was in charge here, if true that mourinhos not staying past this summer that ship has sailed imo

Would be interesting to know why it didn’t happen.

Reports suggested Levy and Jose were very keen.

Campos is under contract, no reason for Lille to sell him. Think he will be gettable once his contract is up, not easy but possible. Hope he likes us more than Jose.

Tottenhamboss Jose Mourinho is planning a possible reunion with former Belgium midfielder Marouane Fellaini by bringing him to Spurs. The 33-year-old, who worked under Mourinho at Manchester United, has been with Chinese club Shandong Luneng since leaving Old Trafford in 2019. (Voetball 24 via Sun)

Think we definitely need a different transfer strategy.

Not sure of the legitimacy of that link - A classic example of putting manager and ex-player together again.

I think in terms of the SD talk overall, for us as a club, you would think the pros would outweigh the cons. Some of these are more my interpretation to be fair but here goes:

Pros being:
- Maintains a cycle of largely lower cost recruitment - Prevents squad going stale and provides healthier rotation
- Generally brings in some additional expertise around attributes players have and could have to plug key gaps in the squad
- Allows for some players to be sold on to fund more activity and/or selling bigger players in order to fund 2+ other weak areas

Cons being:
- Needs to work well alongside the manager and chairman

I'm sure there are others and I acknowledge that all my pros are far from given in the context of it all working out. But if you consider this role as bringing certain skills relative to scouting and recruitment, then on paper those elements should hold up. Those skills are clearly visible in a number of SDs and DoFs, Campos being a clear example.

The con is a big one though. If that relationship(s) goes to shite, then the whole set-up is destined to fail. For me this is where some people (Levy for example) need to handover some of the responsibilities and ownership. Without that trust it's not going to happen and for me, this is likely why we've not been back to this model since Arnesen(?). Trust and egos i guess.

For me since that our model seems to have been based on recruiting very carefully in terms of cost for a long time (stadium had begun to and may change it) a DoF has always made a lot of sense to me and under Poch would have helped with stale squad syndrome and perhaps doing better with the cash we did raise from players sales.

I guess the bottom line is, do we trust this manager? would he work with a DoF? Can Levy delegate some of this responsibility?
