All of a sudden we are approaching a situation where we can rotate without weakening. Building something real here, guys.
a bit too premature to say that, no? not like we're going for established players with a vast curriculum under their belt. that could turn out to be the case but it's not a guarantee. not there's any when it comes to signings, but you get the gist.

That’s true in isolation but not when you consider the larger picture of squad building as a whole. Is it better to have Kelly now, or to have Kelly in June and an extra £10m to play with? You could argue it either way; same goes for Bournemouth.
Who's to say he would chose us when he is a free transfer. He would have multiple offers from other big clubs. Risk to waiting.

Bournemouth need a LB, why not just do a straight swap for Reguiilon?
Because then we would have a new CB, and Bournemouth would still need a LB?

(I kid, I kid....but really depends on whether Reguilon meets their needs, and if he wants to go.)

I'd take him for 10mil, that's the back four sorted.
Think we probably all would. But to me that implies he's a £30m+ player on a long contract and I'm not sure he is. At the end of the window I think you could knock 2-3m off that and it might be that DL says - sorry I paid the money and got you the one you really wanted early but we're going to haggle over the other

We would have to be very unlucky - again - on the injury front, and very lucky to get past City in the cup if we were to really need Kelly this season - so can't we just arrange a pre-contract if he is keen to join?
He can only do a pre-contract with a foreign club. Can’t do it in the same league.

Would love this as it strengthens the squad but also frees up the recruitment teams attention in the summer.

As if Romero won’t get booked or sent off again. And with VDV’s hamstring history, it would be a good idea to have someone to rotate and/or come on to ease the burden.

Why risk it. Davies is out for awhile and two players returning from injury. Not worth putting the entire season at risk

When did people start thinking Kelly was a top defender? Candidly he’s always looked pretty bang average to me. He was skinned alive by us earlier in the season.
Not sure he’s our long term future sorted

Since when was it such a bad idea to have 4 good quality options for 2 positions!? So many people seem against the idea!
Who has said that? Most who are not fussed about Kelly just seem to regard Davies as a good quality option.

Because we need a pathway for youth.

We dont need a back up RCB and a back up LCB when Dragusin can cover both positions.
Pathways Smarfways! If they’re good enough, they’ll play or we’ll have good players to trade and upgrade areas of our squad that need improving.

Waiting for youth players to ‘become great’ is a dangerous business. Show ambition and those situations take care of themselves.

This has always been far more an idea in fans head than reality.

In reality, pretty much all Premier League managers have a core rotation of typically 18 players, supplemented by fringe players and youth (and backup GK). In practical terms, what this means is that managers opt for a player out of position in preference to eg player 19 in position.

Similarly what actually happens with the "good players to trade" re above post, is that previously good players stagnate, are identified by fans as 'dead wood' in a continuing cycle, we struggle to shift them, and don't get good return when we do.

Not typically the teams who want to compete for the top honours.

It is what the top challenging teams do just as much as others.

Man City, 17 both this and last season
Liverpool, 18 this season, 19 last season
Arsenal, 16 both this and last season

Being in more competitions means higher frequency of rotation within this numbers; not more numbers.

Living in Australia, it is a bit hard to keep up with all our injury news, so do we actually know approximately how long Davies is out for.

If injury is around 2 more months, Kelly would be good for now and also being Davies long term replacement.
