Woodward is a shit turd but I don't think you can really blame him for not getting Sancho, Grealish and Upamecano. Most clubs in the world would want to sign them and the reason they haven't already is because they are all disgustingly expensive.

Yeah the problem with this though is that Utd have already showed their hand when they signed Maguire for £80m, they basically told the whole world that they have money to spend and will do whatever it takes to pay it hence why they're always being quoted stupid prices. You have to look at Woodward as just a bad negotiator and poker player - contrast that to Levy, he may frustrate some people but he will never be bent over on prices.

I really don’t get the Sancho thing. Is he worth £100m? Is he worth £60m even? What is the attraction, is it to get over on the neighbours?

20 goals and 20 assists for Dortmund last season, that's pretty special for a 19/20 year old.

What they really need though are 2 new centre-backs.

It's exceptional. Yet this was an opportunity for United to try change the perception that they are not going to be held to ransom. They should have stated that this market is different and they'll be no big money signings. In the same manner Jose did.

They then could have said Sancho isn't for this window and it may have sent a message to other clubs. Instead they said money would be tight but they continued to pursue it despite the price being set high.

Now they'll continue to be taken advantage of

He's been absolutely remarkable for Dortmund - probably the best player of his age the Bundesliga has ever seen - and is a monumental talent who is lethal when used correctly.

Like so many players he hasn't really been able to replicate that for England so far, but the talent is real.

Still can't quite get over how moronic the Maguire signing was. It was like they looked at Liverpool signing VVD and thought the only option was to spend an absolutely absurd amount of money on a CB as if that would solve all of their woes.

Thing is, Liverpool had actually done their homework and knew VVD's true value, whereas United spaffed a record amount on and above average, but ultimately not very special, slabster. Just reeks of the reactionary, poorly planned recruitment.

Maguire wasn't even the best centre-back at Leicester at the time, an absolute disaster of a signing for £80m. Even more comical that he is their captain.

Above average is being pretty damn generous to Maguire, dont you think? He’s a very meh defender(id say below average) living on a good season with Leicester and his transfer fee. Soyoncu, his replacement at Leicester, is a good CB but a MASSIVE upgrade on Maguire. Maguire is levels below him.

Simon Stone (BBC) made a weirdly emphatic point that they'd been tracking Telles for six years (he made the same point about the kids they signed too). Who knows with Woodward.
...but it's also reported that they were favourites to sign Reguillon and were only put off by RM's insistence on the buy-back clause. It must be great for Telles' self-esteem to know that he was effectively a second choice (despite being tracked for 6 years!)

But he also says he’s currently happy at Man Utd in the next breath. Papers won’t focus on that though obviously.

I think they're fair to focus on the Madrid thing. Man Utd still see themselves or hold themselves as a final destination for players, so for them to be a stepping stone to a Real or Barca isn't ideal.

Not to mention just the principal of anyone saying I'd dream to play elsewhere isn't ideal. No matter if they're happy at yours.

I actually thought Fernandes was bought in as his replacement and he’d go there in the summer. Seems Madrid weren’t ready to buy him then though for the obvious financial reasons. I reckon he’ll go there next summer when Madrid have a proper go at the transfer window.

That won’t be a good thing for everyone else though. He’s the albatross around that club’s neck. A real problem for whoever is the current or next manager while he is there.

Yeah I’m sure I read something about that being the plan before COVID happened.
