I wonder if Saudi will get tired of this?

They clearly thought they could come in and do what Dubai did at City - spend spend spend until they put themselves on top and then globally takeover.

But this gonna really block them, honestly can't see Newcastle winning any titles if they are having to sell players to kick on.

Would the Saudi's be happy with 5th-8th place finishes every year?
Was wondering aloud as much a couple of months back. Seems to me to make more sense to funnel money into Clearlake/Chelsea and whatever other projects they want to get involved with. I think there's simply too much to do in Newcastle to build anything at the top end of European football very quickly. Last season was an outlier for them, and it looks like they can't get away with putting a rocket up them. At least Chelsea already have the money sloshing about the squad.

I don't get this train of thought to be honest. Surely the point of sports washing is to build your profile and moral standing, not to just pump money in to something so the yanks can get all the credit if it works.

They have ties to clear lake sure, but they aren't going to mindlessly pump money into Chelsea fc.

It will be the Man City model. The money City are bringing in was referenced earlier and Newcastle will likely get to something like that, the difference being that they may have to be a bit more careful how they go about it if the ffp watchers are looking more closely at things. Success will be much less guaranteed though as we've yet to see a league with two petro teams(apart from the Saudi league, but you know..) and two teams cannot both win everything.

I was more thinking, jack it up behind the scenes for now, and then take it over. Which would work even better if they can be seen to be saving it all from the Americans fucking it up.

Feels like more injuries across the board this season (unless that's just me?).

There are. It's a consequence of a football calendar that has been out of whack since the pandemic break in 2020. The summer restart that year, the next summer's Euros, the winter World Cup in 2022, all contributing factors that lead to more stress on players' bodies as their rest periods get shorter and shorter, and now we're seeing them break down more and more often.

Lengthy VAR stoppages have also been mooted as a contributory factor - VDV's hammy for example...

Yes long stoppages in play leading to player's muscles cooling down too much before being called back into action is definitely not helpful.

Its a medium term game.

quite easy for them to put money in. Who has heard of their shirt sponsors? That will be easy to uplift for PIF. add 10% each year because the survey says its good value. They are yet to sponsor off the stadium naming rights - whatever Abu dhabi pays for the City stadium they can match.
Adidas are next seasons sponsors no doubt as PIF owns a big chunk of the German sports manufacturer.
They are hoovering up youth talent - cash flow in a few years time.
Utd have a global coffee sponsor - why cant PIF get one of their companies to "sponsor" thier travel arrangements etc.

Thats over £100m without really even thinking about it.

Its certainly short term pain but give it a few seasons especially if there continues to be 5 CL places.

Plus stoppage times of 10 plus minutes per half. A year or so ago 5 mins was seen as a long stoppage in a game where there had been plenty of action. Now 5 mins seems a really short amount of time to add on

When are the premier league going to follow up on PIF’s “ironclad“ promise that they weren’t run by the Saudi state? that’s been proved a lie already in court documents related to LIV golf.
I think the correct answer is never.
