Ex-England footballer Paul Gascoigne has said that football clubs should not stop players from drinking.

Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp has vowed to ban alcohol following Ledley King's arrest for an alleged assault outside a London nightclub.
But Gascoigne thinks players are under pressure and need to relax.

"It's a little lesson for Ledley King. That's OK. He'll learn from that, there's not a problem, leave the kid alone. What can you do?" he said.

After all, Gascoigne drank and it never did him any harm.

He said: "Now there's twice as many paparazzis, I've got followed today all day from nine o'clock. Four paparazzi would not leave us alone and you're going to get that now. It's just how you cope with them.

He added: "I enjoyed my time. Sometimes people don't leave me alone to get on with my life. Sometimes it gets too much."

Bless him.

That must be the dumbest excuse I've ever read in a long while.

I don't agree with banning alcohol altogether though, but there should definitely be set rules as to when and how much they are allowed to drink between games.

All i know is that if one of my team mates come to the game having been out till 4 am in the morning getting pissed i would be fuming (and we play a lot lower than spurs). If they aren't disiplined enough not to be professional i dont want them at the club. Its about time the club took on a professional attitude towards everything. whats the point of rehydrating eating well and being the best athelete the club can make them if they get pissed as a newt every weekend.

i cant understand why these comments from Gazza have been given so much mileage over the last few days. After all look at the nick of him. Hardly one to be giving advice on anything, least on whether the consumption of alcohol should be permitted or not.

The very fact Gazza is himself arguing against the alcohol ban means it strengthens the reasons why the ban SHOULD be in place.

Cheers gaz

I remember when I lived in Bangkok we used to take our boots with us to Patpong/Soi Cowboy/Nana Plaza on a Saturday night and then go straight to the ISB for a 9-00am kickoff in the morning. Never did us any harm and we were only amateurs. I don't see why super-fit professionals shouldn't be able to spend the whole night drinking and still be able to play. Bunch of wimps. They should just train harder then it wouldn't matter what they drank.
