We have to follow the money. Point is we got nothing for Bentley when we should have cut our losses a lot earlier. Same with Gomes. That's not to say Levy is not a good negotiator, he is a brilliant one (whose policy sometimes backfires). Now we face the same dilemma. If we don't sell Lamela now, albeit at a cut rate price, we may get nothing for him if he could not overcome his unspecified injury, or if his contract runs down. On the other hand, if we were to sell him, and he comes good, then the loss is ours. Such is business, such is life.Actually we released him from his contract, he didn't leave on a free. If you want to use that as an example, compare that to the amount of players we've sold who's contracts are running down - there's countless examples.

Cough - Sol Campbell - coughNever in a million years would Levy let a player run his contract down, if there's an interested party he'll try and maximise the most out of them and sell him but he wouldn't let him go for free.

Some people just can't help themselves when it comes to Lamela bashing. Clueless!
Just on the balance sheet sadly.Oh well, can't say I'll be all that bothered if he goes. It's not like he's left a gaping hole in the squad.
Why are people clueless?
We signed a coveted attacking midfielder and got the Argentinean James Milner / Gareth Barry. When they're fit, which they are more than he is. A lot more.
And when they're injured it's not unspecified
Let's agree he's a decent player, a good one even. But for 2 of the last 4 seasons, he's been, to use a business term, a non-performing asset. You are hoping he will be fit and will perform as he did before October. Well, in football, as in business, we don't hope, we assess and we act. Right now, we need to look at possible replacement, and get the best price we can for Lamela. It's possible nobody will want him, given his injury record, in which case we are stuck with hope. But cutting our losses now is best course of action, from a footballing and a business standpoint. If you don't think we'd miss Lamela then you either haven't been paying attention or you don't understand our squad dynamics. Even if he'd probably lose his first team place now that we've gone to a 3 at the back system please don't try and pretend he hasn't or wouldn't make a value contribution to our team because he would. It was proven last season where he was one of our key players and there were some matches where we missed his energy and his tenacity and we dropped our intensity as a result, he also provided 9 assists in the league last season and if Eriksen is out who's going to provide the creativity?
Even if we sell him then that's a gaping hole left in the squad in which we have to replace and seeing as our weakness right now is our lack of competent backup or players who can come in and do a job when a first teamer is out are you seriously suggesting that we won't miss him? You have short memories or you're being ignorant if you think that is the case.

The clueless quality is shown by your little strawman of an argument. He was pretty fit for all of last season. Neither of them had a monoglot called Sherwood making fun of him in public. Why are people clueless?
