It's nor really a fair question because by the time Ledley was Toby's age and entering his prime years, injuries were already robbing him of some of his physical capabilities.

SImples. In 2006, King was better than Toby.

In 2016, Toby is better than King.

Toby has not reached his peak yet, but at their peak, Toby will be a better player - virtually all current athletes are better than the athletes 10+ years ago. Improvements in training, conditioning, diet, etc. make any real comparisons non-starters.

Thing is, King never reached his peak due to - as we all know - a terrible run of injuries.

You said 'King at his best'. Surely that's not when he's injured?

King was always injured to a certain extent as he done his knee on his debut and it probably hampered him throughout his career. He can only be judged on the career he had not on the one he could have had.
I would argue kings best season was the year we made the champions league under rednapp

King - though not much in it

Imagine them at the same time - that's almost homoerotic...we'd win the league I reckon if they stayed fit

King at his best would be an all-time great. He was pretty fucking spectacular on one knee for years. In the vacuum of a theoretical existence, it's King and it's not that close. And I say that not as an insult to Toby, who is my DAWG but to fully convey how good King was at times and he was rarely at full health throughout his career. Indeed, it may have been the thing that allowed us to keep him.

King and Toby would be an orgasmic CB partnership. Verts and Toby is A-MA-ZING as it is.

A real shame that King will be consigned to the history books as a good but not great player due to factors other than talent and drive but them's the breaks. I do hope that in future gens of Spurs supporters, the natural talent that was Ledders will always be remembered.

Nice idea but in my opinion this type of thread is useless without a poll.

I would vote King. Toby is good he is made to look even better with quality defence surrounding him. Unlike King he doesnt have to carry the defence. I dont think Toby would be as effective as he is now if he had to play with the likes of Gomez behind him. So even crocked, King was better IMO.

On ability alone: King

But Alderweireld happens to have two knees, and that makes him a more valuable player to have in the squad imho.
