SSN saying Napoli want Vertonghen. Use him as a sweetener for Koulibaly. Squad place issues sorted.

Ever since Vertonghen was linked there over the weekend I wondered if it might of been a sweetener. Would make sense.

Not as big as other areas.

We have Toby, Jan, Sanchez, Foyth, Tanganga, Dier and even Davies.

I guess though that Jose doesn't trust our defense that much hence the interest in KK, personally i'd rather spend big on some quality fullbacks.
We’ve conceded the most goals of all the Premier teams since Jose came in. It’s an issue

Does 60mil plus Vertonghen even make them think about it?
Maybe but I imagine our offer would be 30m plus or something. Levy always overvalues our outgoings and he will be looking to pay no more than 60m for Koulibaly

Our defenders are not aggressive enough, other than the Wolves game, I don't see them getting close to attackers, getting blocks in and closing space down.

It's true that without a DM we are more vulnerable but a defender like Koulibaly would help in this essence as he's a presence, he's aggressive and he won't be bullied off the ball.

Koulibaly would be one big statement and would sort us out defensively. Although I would imagine Foyth may go to RB until the summer when we can get someone in. However it still wouldn't fix the issue we have in midfield, so just one signing whislt its one big signing, wouldn't be enough to suddenly send us back to the top 4. CDM and CB minimum is needed short term.

Be sad to see Vertonghen go though but if it means upgrading the squad then we have to start being ruthless. Poch was right when he said it would be a painful rebuild.

We could get a top quality DM and a fullback for what he'll cost. If we buy him we'll most likely get neither. It's a question of priorities.

We need all of them. They're all priorities.

This guy is one of the best CBs in the world. Top ten for sure.

You don't turn down these opportunities.

Few places have it now but the source seems to be a local Naples paper.

At this point I have little doubt we’ve asked the price/if the player would be interested. Whether we’ll pull the trigger, obviously TBD.

I obviously didn't get the memo about us suddenly having limitless funds.

We obviously don't have unlimited funds, but we've got a stack of cash to spend, including the 18/19 summer budget.

And that's before considering that transfer payments are staggered over a number of seasons.

We could also spend the summer's budget now, if needs be.

All in all, we're one of the richest clubs iin the world.

I didn't say we did. Nor am I saying we'll get much done this window but if we have the chance to sign a world class player in one of the positions of need we should be all over it.

We won't have any chance of signing a world class equivalent at RB or DM this window.

So yeah, if we can get KK now you'd be a moron to turn your nose up at it.

This. We're not a 'sugar daddy'/ oil-rich club but we do have plenty of cash.

- Record profits.
- Most expensive ticket prices in the world.
- £400m+ turnover and rising significantly every year.
- Newly restructured stadium debt which minimises yearly payments over a longer term.

The problem isn't money, it's Levy's philosophy. As he said himself recently in an interview, "English clubs are obsessed with spending money" or words to that effect. Until he works out that a club like Spurs playing in a competitive league needs to spend money regularly (within reason) to refresh the playing staff I doubt we'll see any quick improvements in our fortunes on the pitch. I'd like to think hiring Mourinho means we might see a change in approach but I won't be holding my breath.

Everyone here knows we need a DM, but just as a CB isn’t a “magic bullet”, nor is a DM.

There are a lot of goals we’ve conceded due to not having a DM sensing danger, but also a lot of goals from simply rank bad defending.

If we can buy a quality ready made CB then it’s a big step in the right direction.

I am amazed some people are genuinely thinking there are any legs in this.

He’d surely be 80/90m. For that money we could buy a new CB and a CM/RB. Both with proper resale value.

That’ll be the way Levy will be thinking about it. Which means this will never happen.

And now free of any stadium related financial uncertainty which surely is the clincher for starting to use some of the extra dough that's been flowing in for the last few years on improving the team.
