Might be a bit cheeky to make this thread but baring in mind the ITK/big rumours about us bidding huge for Mata this summer... This is interesting:

Pete O'Rourke ‏@SkySportsPeteO24m
Jose Mourinho has told Juan Mata and Michael Essien that his door is open if they want to leave Chelsea. #CFC

I'm sure there will be potentially more exciting suitors for Mata but if Chelsea would in theory sell to us, I think he'd entertain the idea?

Mata won't be sold to a team in the EPL, let alone a London rival. He will probably go to PSG. :)

If we've got another £30m or so to spend, that isn't the area we should be spending it on.

If we keep playing 4-4-2, I wouldn't want him to come to us. And I don't think he'd want to play in a 4-4-2 either.
Shame really as he's a top-notch player.

He'd be worth spending 35 million on.

--Paulinho--Sandro
Lamela--Mata--Eriksen
-----Soldado/Ade----

Would be an outstanding front 6. I'd get Berba back in on a short contract as well.

So we are just switching back to the old one striker system? :)

Madness. Mata is EXACTLY the player we're missing. Sell 2 or 3 of our other midfielders to make it happen.

Not that I think they'd ever sell to us or that Mata would choose us over other suitors who'd come in.

Mata would be the perfect VdV replacement.

We haven't even begun to see the best of Lamela yet and we need reinforcement at left back, centre back and possibly another striker.

I don't see what Lamela has to do with it. They don't really occupy the same position currently, and Mata is a proven class player.

What on earth do we need another striker for? Our problem under AVB has been creating REAL chances for our strikers. We're now creating chances and scoring but Mata would take us to another level and also with his added creativity allow us to play with only one striker without having the same problems we had under AVB IMHO.

Left back, just get BAE back in and left back is OK IMHO.

CB is obviously a problem area for us since it seems all of our best ones are made of plastic but once Verthongen is back we're going to be in a lot better shape there too.

Would take him in a heartbeat and I think he'd listen to what we have to say.

Chelsea would never entertain the idea in a million years.

Better? ;)

I think we need the ability to play multiple systems though.

I get what you're saying, but this is Juan Mata. Not just one of the best players in the league but one of the best in the world. It'd be similar to Arsenal signing Ozil. The last position they needed to strengthen, but you just can't say no when the chance to sign someone like that comes up.

And how would we accommodate Mata, Eriksen, Lamela and Paulinho in the same team? Once Lamela is fully settled in and playing well he'll contribute goals and creativity.

I said possibly another striker as Defoe seems to be off, Kane is unproven and if anything happens to Adebayor or Soldado then we're down to one senior striker. As I clearly intimated it's not an urgent priority, but if say Berbatov was a possibility it could be worth looking at.

Anyway, there's no way we'll sign Mata, so there's no point getting hopeful about it.
