People said the same about Vicario and VDV in the summer. How about placing some trust in the manager, who knows the player, and the recruiting department, who have done really well recently?

A player's price tag says nothing about his quality or his worth for the buying team, only his worth for the selling team.
Exactly this, if Ange wants a player that played for him previously, that can only be a good thing as he will know exactly whether he will work or not. We should be excited if he comes

If Ange wants him. I am all in. Ange has been speaking about getting players who have the right mentality. Jota appears to be a battler who is willing to play in tough areas, and intelligent. Some of his one touch crossing into the box would be a pleasure to watch.

I think this data is pretty interesting. Obviously we are all a bit worried as he did well for Celtic but it was the Scottish league.

As you can see below however, his data in the CL last season was also very good. It’s obviously a small sample size as it’s from the group stage, in which he played around 300 minutes (think he missed a couple of games with injury).

Still, this data shows very good performance against strong teams. This data includes his games against Madrid x2, Leipzig and Shakhtar.

He also did well in the Europa League for them in the previous season.

As a free he is a no brainer surely. Having him and Solomon as options where they both cost zero is pretty good business.

If he’s got boots and a pulse he’s in with a great shout atm
All I mean is that playing for an ange team in the premiership is the polar opposite to what he is doing currently (jogging around in 40c). We don't have the luxury of giving players a few months of 'pre season' in season to get them up to speed, they need to be first team ready and able from the get go.

It’s only good business if the manager wants them. Not sure he really wanted Solomon tbh. He would want Jota though!

If we bring him in for free he will know Ange's system, offer a goal threat and allow us to potentially sell Gil to free up funds for further recruitment in other positions.

To all those believing this is simply a case of opportunism I say yes it's opportunistic. But if he didn't improve the squad the deal wouldn't be done.

If he's free or on loan my only question is whether he's an upgrade on Gil(yes) or Solomon (no idea) or Sessegnon (yes) or Perisic (post injury).

True.

A huge part of the transfer market is about opportunism. We likely wouldn't have got Maddison if Leicester hadn't been relegated.

Jota is in a situation where he is likely available, possibly even for free. If he's the right player then this is an opportunity we should look into.

A footballers career is short, can be cut short by injury and at the very top is a unique job.

Why shouldn't a footballer want to make "quick money"?

You and I would, and i think the vast majority in here would. I have experienced many, many employees that have moved on for more money, many that have given up a bright qualified future for more money today.

Footballers are relatively no different from anyone in a job, they are just looking out for themselves and for the future of their families.

Mendes has built his business around supply and demand, and no one ever points a gun to a Chairman's head and asks to have a cheque cut, and certainly not Daniel Levy's.

I think if he's available on loan we should get him and like Kulu and Bentancur look at him at the end of the season regarding a permanent signing, a no risk option for both parties.
People : You owe your company nothing. They will replace you the moment you drop dead. Jump ship when you want. A job is only for making money.

*Footballer does the same

People : Ackchyually....

Not everyone thinks like that, not everyone is driven by money.
I'm earning less now than I used to, or could but I really enjoy my job, it's not stressful and it's literally on my doorstep.
It's about quality of life for me nowadays.

I've chased the money in the past but with my mental health the way it now is, happiness and time with my kids comes first for me at this stage of my life.

Sure, but these are your decisions.

The morals we try to push onto footballers just aren't the same in other areas of life.

I'm not opposed to this tbh.

Our squad is really stretched and it is a player that can adapt quickly.

We all look toward a rebuild but you do need a bit of opportunistic buys from time to help you out and this one fits

Oh of cours and I didn't intend to push any morals onto Jota, I just previously voiced my question and thoughts regarding his move.
With Mendes involved there's always something dodgy going on and as I admitted earlier, it may be down to my bias but I find moving to Saudi at 24 a bit of a odd career move.

@Locotoro posted a really good alternative perspective a while back in response to one of my previous posts.
I think that people catching up on the thread have dug it all back up again.

I wasn't talking about you specifically, just the point.

All the time we read about how footballers need to be loyal. When they're unwanted they should leave for the good of the club and all sorts of other points that just aren't norms in any other parts of society.

I agree with that, you only have to look at some of the posts in the PEH and even Hugo threads over the months.

I was just joking around. Good to hear that you are feeling happy now. I traded a comfortable job for a high paying and challenging job last year and it has at times really messed me up. But I am young with a bit of fuel to burn right now so focusing on getting strong financial foundations. But I will definitely prioritising peace of mind for my next job.
