Yeah Moutinho would be an excellent signing for say 10-15 million. But now, after the tournament he's had, and Porto's Levy-esque chairman? No chance.

I say we just move on lads.

it would make sense we would bid for him if/when modric leaves and if/when AVB comes in

direct replacement for luka .. and a super player with plenty of attributes that will make the team tick for sure

funny how before his last 2 games for portugal a few people thought moutinho would be a poor signing and wasnt a good player

Does it matter if Modric goes

Yes it still matters. Because say we get Sahin in exchange (I know it doesn't happen, but just now and then it does) then do we really need to spend a bucket load on another creative midfielder? If we have £30m to burn a hole in our pockets I think we'd be better spunking it on a striker.

I don't think Porto will let him go this summer IF they sell Hulk - to much change for them, however if the Hulk deal falls through then they may well see getting £15-20m for Moutinho as a good thing for them.

It would be up to AVB to convince the player to come and to force the move through though.

We could always do a Liverpool though and say that the price of Modric is whatever Moutinho costs us + £20m ;)

Obviously Sahin would be an excellent alternative.

But I do think getting one of them (or someone else similar like Cabaye) is as essential as strikers. The England performance in the Euros shows just how impossible it is to compete at the highest level without someone who can retain and recycle the ball in midfield.

IIRC they were prepared to let him move to Chelsea last summer, but said Chelsea moved too late (deadline day after we'd turned down their final Modric bid) to allow them to get a suitable replacement in.

Don't suppose you know what the potential fee was going to be?

I think signings from Eurozone clubs are a good idea at the moment. They're cheaper than they have been in a while. I think Cabaye would be GBP20-25m to Newcastle. Moutinho would be more like EUR25m.

Don't remember seeing any figure quoted other than his 35m euro release clause.

The other thing though is that last summer Sporting were entitled to 25% of the fee, but Porto have recently bought them out of that (for about £3.5m).

Well he definitely looked a decent player last night and for that reason i'd imagine we aren't the only club interested in him anymore. Can see him securing a move to a top CL team this summer.

I'm not very good at economics, but I thought that southern europe was collapsing because the Germans wont devalue the currency, whereas we are devaluing ours. Therefore I don't think things in Europe are particularly cheap for us, although booming countries like Brazil are even more expensive.

Tell me about it!

On the one hand the property investments i have there have sky-rocketed but on the other i can't really afford to live out there right now.

Joao Moutinho endured penalty misery but he threatened to overshadow Spain's midfield.

The Porto midfielder has long been linked with a move to England, and it was on show for all to see just how much the diminutive midfielder has to offer.

Often regarded as a playmaker and attacker, Moutinho showed he has much more to his game.

Portugal knew that if they were to progress against their Iberian neighbours on Wednesday then they would need their midfield to be at the top of their game.

The three of Miguel Veloso, Raul Meireles and Moutinho were good but it was the Porto man who stood out.

He was given the unenviable task of pushing on and trying to stop Xavi from playing - and there can be few arguments that that is just what he did.

Moutinho, especially in the opening 45 minutes, was everywhere that Xavi was and he also pushed on try to spark an attack or two.

Xavi was taken off just before extra-time, Spain knowing they needed a plan-B. By this point Moutinho was tiring - but even during extra-time he, along with full-backs Fabio Coentrao and Joao Pereira, bombed up and down the pitch, never giving up on their task of keeping the Spanish Armada at bay.

Interest

On the back, not just of this display but of his entire tournament, it is impossible to imagine the interest in Moutinho not soaring - especially from England.

Still only 25, Moutinho has shown that he could physically live with any midfield task - we already knew about his technical skill and his ability to unlock defences.

But more than that in Poland and Ukraine, his discipline, work-rate and exemplary following of team-orders shone through.

Just a matter of years ago, David Moyes on more than one occasion tried to get Moutinho to Goodison Park - he clearly knew what a talent he was.

Andre Villas-Boas wanted him at Chelsea last year, and should he take charge at Spurs you could easily expect him to be again top of his wanted list.

But Moutinho has now performed at one of the biggest stages in world football - and should he leave Porto this summer, he will have his choice of clubs.

I cannot see the (perceived) top 2-3 teams in the Prem coming in for him, likewise Spain, so think if we could put together a good package (with our shiny new investors) and with AVB persuading him, it could happen, and would greatly soften the blow of losing Modders.

I would absolutely love us to sign Moutinho. He is the type of unsung hero that makes sides great. Great technical ability, great engine, dynamism and busy****edness in one package. Yes very please.

By the way, was it Veloso we were being linked with a couple of years ago ?

We used to be constantly linked to Veloso iirc. Quite a few windows in a row I think. On the topic of Moutinho, I think he'd be a very good Modric replacement, and we'd probably be more solid defensively with Moutinho in place of Modric and he is also very good on the ball. He was so impressive in terms of work rate and tackling, something which Modric doesn't do enough for us.
