I said I wanted us to go for him when West Ham were in for him, and everyone on here laughed.

9 goals in 16 games for West Ham suggests to me that we very much missed out.

Hope we get him.

I didn't, Freeeks.

I was even brave enough to admit my liking for him when we were first linked with Conte last summer, due to Lingards work ethic & versatility (probably) being very appealing to Conte and what he expects from his players.

Then again. I'm dense as fuck. So I'm not really sure what my point is.

People can still pretend he's not good if they like but his spell on loan at West Ham was hugely impressive and the kid knows how to get goals.

At one stage he was being compared with Dele but at the time Dele was doing better and was more consistent. That's no longer the case and whilst Lingard is older, he's out-performed Dele in the past year - not difficult - and to essentially swap them would be a smart move.

Jess would be perfect in one of the two AM roles behind Harry when we play 3-4-2-1 or as a 3rd CM when we play 3-5-2.

It's a shame we can't do it now but as long as we're looking for a CM for this month (Kessie perhaps?), which we seem to be, then I'm happy for us to wait til the summer.

So he's not kidding. :cautious:

Again my caveat: if he is who Conte wants (and this isn't just Levy being a cheap wanker as usual) then fine, but I don't see this improving our first 11 significantly. And, despite a purple patch at WH, has underwhelmed for the majority of his career. And his attitude says it all: he'd rather rot on the bench at Man U in the hopes of getting more money than moving sooner to actually play football. Personally, I'd prefer we had players for whom playing comes first. But I'm a footballing homunculus, so what do I know?

Barely improves the bench either.

He's 29 and had one outstanding 6 month period in a very specific role at a club with zero ambitions. I don't think he'll offer us much more than Dele and will likely cost us a similar wage with a smaller resale value.

He's been decent in his brief game time at United this season, where none of that lot have looked particularly great

But not decent enough to get a place in a team that hasn't looked particularly great. This is the issue I have with him; he can play well, that's obvious, but his career is one that is massively underwhelming. Why do we want to take another risk like that on a dude that's probably only got 2 or 3 more seasons in him? If this is the extent of our scouting network, then I find it difficult to have hope for future signings.

Which beloved United player is getting in front of, though?

Ronaldo, Rashford, Bruno, Greenwood, Sancho, Cavani?

It's not that simple. Meanwhile, he's better than Dele currently, probably even Bergwijn, not permacrocked like GLC, and has some semblance of effort - unlike Ndombele

Force of habit calling players "kid", don't want to seem like I'm one of those fans that still thinks Lingard has been 21 for his entire career.

That mirage has been created and constantly peddled by the cretinous media especially SKY, just like they did with the gooner gimp Walnutt

Sure, there are some upsides--potentially, but it's the opportunity cost also, and another deadwood player we'll have to shift in a few seasons. His wage demands won't be insignificant either, and I think could be much better spent elsewhere. But like with all transfers, my opinion matters little and I'll keep an open mind if he signs.

If he is good enough he would be playing for that out of form United team. We should look for better players imo??‍♂️

very true I dont want a club below us in the leagues rejects, and especially a side with the noted toxic players as man utd. Not a fan of lingard and his persona of 'j lingz' etc annoying af. 30 million is also a hell of a lot for a 29 year old, surely that money can be invested better

He is, but he's not going to be playing ahead of the players that they are playing, because United are a funny lot who seem to pick their team like a PE Teacher would - based on reputation, rather than ability

I dont think ability wise his better than anyone in the man utd, if I was offered the chance of lingard or rashford, greenwood, sancho, van de beek, fernandes, ronaldo, I am going for the later ones every every time

Hence the issue. None of those players are going to guarantee an improvement to your team, it's just based on reputation or resale value - none of which makes any difference to any one game. Van der Beek can't get a game for them, Ronaldo has, arguably upset the squad chemistry and isn't suited to PL tactics, and Sancho has been rather ineffective so far.

Hence why, when he went to West Ham, he suddenly looked good - because he was played in his best positions, regardless of reputation.

but lingard has had chances this year and done poor, gave away the goal in the defeat to young boys for example

He's not a defender, so I have no idea why that would be seen as relevant to his form really.

The biggest factor is that, despite apparently being 'poor' and not good enough, he's still had 2 goals and an assist in 268 minutes of game time across 13 appearances - only 2 of which were starts. That's an average of 20 mins per appearance and he's still managed a goal contribution for every 90 mins (268/3 = 89.33).

Pass rate is over 90%, too.
