We should have followed Leicester's strategy...

Remember when people said we had been overtaken by them ?

Infairness they've won the prem and a F.A Cup. We've won nothing and they're a significantly smaller club than us and they've managed to build a new training facility. This forum loves to announce that a club is falling apart, amount of times we've heard that Chelsea are financially fucked.

True. They have that to their name.

Mostly I was pointing out the over reaction a couple of years ago when people were saying Wolves and Leicester had better teams than us and we would be left behind and why would Rodgers leave them for us.

Turns out Leicester have been operating at a financial level above their station and are now at risk. Whilst Wolves are in the pocket of Mendes.

We, if we want to be, can be so so much more

Yeah I think we were in a terrible place at one point but I did feel it was more about poor management and I think that although Bentancur and Kulusevki were great additions, I think it was pretty clear that the majority of the team vastly improved under a competent coach. I certainly agree that Leicester have been operating above their financial level however I do think that was purposeful and it has increased their stature vastly in the game and so their revenue streams will have increased exponentially I imagine and so whilst there's a possibility that they are at the end of that cycle and might have a couple of tough seasons, they should reap the reward over the long term of increasing that exposure in terms of what companies want to be associated with them and players also.

Our approach was a risk in terms of the approach not being done before in the way we gambled on trying to build something beyond the normal match day experienced to increase revenue and also when we don't have games but it's set us up for an incredible future, will be extremely difficult for any team to replicate that and I'm glad we chose that direction. I do think what Leicester has done is smart though and they got rewards for it but now they need to have a sustainable period and build on top instead of chasing the dragon imo.

Tbh you can't really blame people for saying that kind of thing at the time. There was a 2 year period where Leicester were challenging for top 4 while we were down in 6th/7th and the players they were signing looked a lot better than ours.

There was a 4-5 year period where we barely made any decent signings at all while Leicester brought in the likes or Tielemans, Maddison, Ndidi, Fofana, Pereira and climbed above us. It felt like we kept picking the wrong players while they picked the right ones.

Things have completely swung the other way in the past year or so with Conte and Paratici massively improving us in every way while Leicesters signings have gone to shit. Doesn't mean they weren't good a couple of years ago, though, and looked like they were on a better trajectory than we were.

I just think many went OTT and felt we were going to be stuck in midtable obscurity and Leicester were going to replace our stature.

This was never going to be the case. They did make some good signings but even last summer people were angry cause we didn't sign Daka or Soumare and slagging Paratici off, which was ridiculous and has proven to be terrible judgment.

It was just frustrating to see on here.

If they aren’t very careful they’ll get sucked back down into the championship. They’re going to need significant investment just to stay mid table.
They’ll be fine this season but they do need to be careful you’re right.

let’s hope they need to sell Maddison… to us ??

They are in real danger - I think as long as Rodgers stays they have enough to stay in the Prem but medium term they may have problems.

It's the Wigan argument, they are now nothing and nowhere never to see the Premier League again but they won the cup, would they change that to have still been in the Premier league?

I didn’t realise that there were reports as far back as April saying we liked him. The price was £60m back then and we had to move GLC, ndombele etc on, if this is correct. That’s quite interesting as nothing has changed in that regard nor has it with Leicester buying players.

Thread 'Tottenham set for £60million summer transfer scrap for Leicester playmaker James Maddison'

If they don’t make some signings soon I think that Rodgers will walk or we will start hearing some reports about other teams being in for him.

Worse thing is, they are not just 10 players out of contract by 2023...another 7 is also out of contract by 2024, which includes Maddison as well.
Lets see - we all can hope they will sell Maddison - in the end we have to be also willing to part 60m+ on him.

Good. Hopefully they’ll go back to being where they belong after that. The Championship

No need to pay £60m, No other team who he would be interested in joining needs or wants him.

£40m tops

You can. As you usual it was a complete lack of patience and context for our situation. Yes we had a bad couple of seasons but the wider picture was that we were building our infrastructure in order to allow us to consistently compete at the top of the league. That was always the plan.

Fans getting impatient and look at Leicester spending unsustainably and seeing them as the model just proves an ignorance or lack understanding for Levy’s long term vision. Many of us argued this very point at the time.

Agree with this. Just showed how many fans either didn’t understand, or were too impatient to see the long term vision of the club. many of us argued things would change when the stadium revenue started coming in. And here we are.

Spending unsustainably without being backed by some dodgy regime is always going to end badly. I get fans want short-term success but personally I’d rather know we will remain competitive, than be in leicesters position, who are clearly on a downward trajectory, with no way of progressing in the next few seasons.
