As the frenzy of the final few days of the transfer window approaches I thought it’d be interesting to look back at the team we could have had if the ITK over the past few years had come off.
I started trying to put together a “dream team” but it quickly became obvious that it’s far more difficult than it’d first appear. One issue is the huge amount of quality attacking players we’re linked to. Who’d you go for up front? When you have the option of picking from Eto’o, Suarez, Aguero and Torres it’s not as clear a choice as it could be.
On the other hand, you have players who we’d have all gone crazy over had they signed but who’ve arguably gone on to flop with Arshavin and Huntelaar amongst them, demonstrating you just can’t tell how some players will adapt to a new club/league.
Having said that, there’s a huge list to choose from so I’ll pick mine to start the discussion going and see if anyone else can do better.
Goalkeeper – We’ve not been linked with many but I’m going for the highly rated youth that Chelsea recently pipped us to, Courtois. While still inexperienced I think he’ll develop into a very good keeper.
Right Back – As we already have a wide selection of these it’s understandable that we haven’t been linked to many but Micah Richards is one name that’s cropped up from time to time and is a player I rate highly. Another option here would have been Darijo Srna but I feel Richards just edges it.
Central Defence – There’s a few to choose from here. There’s recent names like Cahill, Tasci and Samba as well as ones from previous windows like Ferdinand and Materrazzi. I’m going for Ferdinand and Kjaer but Cahill almost edged out Ferdinand who’s not quite the player he was.
Left Back – Here I’ve had to look hard as we’ve had few links to a player in this position. One player we've been linked to several times is Bastos who whilst primarily a left winger does play left-back for Brazil.
Right Wing – Moving onto the attacking players and suddenly our options are much healthier. I’m going for Beckham. I know he’s old and there are other options but I still think he’d walk into our team. I considered puting David Villa on the right wing but with the wealth of attacking players to choose from I decided to pick Beckham for his leadership.
Central Midfield - If eligible I’d go for Diarra here but it looks as if by the time I’ve finished writing this we’ll have wrapped up the deal so I’ve left him out. Instead, I’ve gone for a similar player in Sissoko who’s very much in the Diarra/Vieria mould and who we’ve been linked to several times. Alongside him I’ve gone for Sneijder to bring the attacking flare. Other options would have been Adam or Veloso.
Left Wing – As for all our attacking positions there were several options for left wing but I’ve gone for Robben who just pipped Turan for me.
Forwards – Here is where we really are spoilt for choice. There are easily 20 players who we’ve been linked to who could form a world class strike force, making it all the more frustrating that we’re still left with the rubbish we have up front. I’m going for Aguero and Torres together up front but could easily have goner for Suraez and Eto’o or Dzeko and Rossi.
Manager – As with the players we’ve been linked with several managers over the last few years but there’s one that stands out above the rest and was championed on Spurscommunity long before his impressive performances at Porto thrust him into the limelight and the Chelsea hot-seat. Step forward Jose Mourinho to manage the Spurscommunity ITK Dream Team.
So there you have it. I’ve picked mine and it looks like this:
If you fancy a go, here’s a list of some of the players to choose from:
