At first sight makes sense to bring in Gus Poyet because he spent some time here as a player and because he speaks Spanish . But the reality is that he has not exactly torn up trees as a coach or indeed when he was here as a player ( one of Hoddle's Europe or bust senior statesmen and we all know what happened ). The playing part does not matter that much but let's not forget he is really Chelscum through and through. More importantly at Leeds him and Wise were regarded as pretty incompetent by their fans last season and only now in division 1 have they found their level.
It seems to me he has mostly been brought in as a glorified interpreter, a kind of PR figure until Ramos gets his English up to speed. My understanding is that Ramos can make himself understood in English and giving him a language teacher might have been a better option.
I said before that I think Peter Taylor would have been an excellent choice for assistant Manager. Yes he failed as Manager to get anything out of the crap players he had at Palace and Leicester but with the U21's he was possibly the best ever in that position bringing the best out of young talented players ( including Lennon and Hudd ).Ideal number 2.Great for our young kids.
Anyway too late now. Gus is an enthusiastic guy so let's hope he can compensate for his lack of coaching credentials by learning from Ramos.

Has anyone heard Poyet speaking English recently? I rememebr when he played for us his accent was one of the hardest to understand. He speaks good English, but it just doesn't sound like English.

Gus Poyet is a good number 2, he has done well working alongside Dennis Wise and at leeds and was a fan favourite while at the lane... People are always so negative bout anything we do...

You can't really judge a number two by the clubs performance, thats down to the manager. A good assistant will flourish under a good head coach.

But doesn't Ramos already have a number 2 in Marcos Alvarez, or is he just a coach? i'm pretty confused...

And is Perry Suckling now our head keeper coach? Will Patty Jennings step up and pull on a tracksuit again?

Alvarez is a Fittness trainer, don't think he'll be the number two, just advising on fitnesss and stuff.

Personally I don't vare what role Poyet is going to do at the club. Either Ramos has requested him personally or somebody in the club thinks he will be good to have on the training pitch or dressing room. At the end of the day the buck will stop with Ramos and his word will be final. People over the last few days have pretty much slagged everyone and everything spurs, we need to get behind the club and let Ramos do his job. So what if he cant speak english and needs an interpreter, at the end of the day he wont take shit from any player and they wont get in the team just because of the name on the back of their shirt. This is what we need so when people have a shit game he drops them and they dont get back in until he feels they merit it. Ultimately this will hopefully make the players push themselves harder for their shirt which can only be good for OUR club.

But his actual English was always very good, the problem was his very strong South American accent. He speaks very quickly and with a tyical Latin lisp.

Such an ill informed post.

Poyet is a very competent coach by all accounts. When at Tottenham he started voluntarily taking training sessions and coaching the youngsters, just to get experience for later. He's now done his badges, and is a top class coach.

At Leeds it's rumoured that he's the tactical genius, with Wise as a figure head and motivator.

And to say he's Chelsea through and through is just wrong.

The continental management set-up invariably includes specialist coaches for the banks of personnel in a line-up. It may be that Poyet has a specific role to fulfill, as will Alverez. Time will tell, but as someone else has already said, Ramos is his own man and will bring in who he thinks he'll need to do his job.

If I remember rightly he kissed our badge when he scored against Chelsea when we beat them in the League cup.

Like its said above, he worked with the younger players when he was still playing for us. When he retired he went to Uraguay and worked with a local prem team there, coaching the youth team. He did his badges and came back with Wise. Its been a learning process since then. He was a very good player with very good technique. He's very chatty and has an open character. I dont see any reason why he wouldn't be a good coach.

Surely Poyet would be useful as someone who knows about English football and can speak English and Spanish... Should help Ramos settle in...

Where is the link with Poyet and Ramos though?

Someone said Ramos was from Uraguay like Gus or coached the Uraguan side when Gus was skipper
Either way Poyet sounds like a fast improvement on Houghton.

From Leeds official website:-

Leeds United have granted permission for Tottenham Hotspur to speak to Gus Poyet with a view to taking up employment with them. A compensation package has been agreed, the terms of which will remain confidential.
