What the hell just happened there? An utterly shit day of betting gets worse. Not even an E/W sniff.

Done Manuela de Vega myself in a patent with Favorite Moon and Laafy at Haydock

Just got this through

JACKAMUNDO 1.30 Haydock, 1 point win 6/1 generally

Has already been well supported but he still looks worth siding with on ground and a track he likes. He was very impressive over 10 furlongs here last June winning by 5 lengths in similar deep ground off just a 2lb lower mark. Since then he’s run with credit in much better races and proved his stamina when finishing 5th to the ultra smart Hamish at York. He meets nothing like that calibre of animal today and after a recent pipe opener on the AW he seems sure to go close.

Currently 66/1, may be worth a small E/W.

Think I’m going to have to knock it on the head for a while.

After 4 good days at Ascot I chucked half the profit away on the last day and ever since I’ve been chasing and losing. Now I’m worse off than before Ascot and don’t want to get into the stage where I have to top up my betting accounts.

Time to step away for a bit......

... see you all in here tomorrow probably ;) :D.

I've been close to doing similar. It really is a bug if you let it get out of hand. Even when winning you're close to getting carried away, throwing away winnings on stupid bets and chasing it to get back to where you were. Did that a bit yesterday so went easy today and only backed one horse. It lost. Two others that I would've backed on a normal day won. FFS!

Yeah, gambler’s hindsight is a bitch alright.

Thing is, we all like to beat the bookies, but they’re not daft. And since they started making it 1/5 rather than 1/4 odds E/W it’s harder to get value for a place.

If you’re willing to bet bigger stakes on short prices then fine, but I’m not generally so I find myself more and more doing multiples. Which soon adds up, even if it’s just a fiver here, a tenner there etc.

I don’t bet big money and as I said I try to play with the money I already have in there as I feel that gives me the illusion of control. It is a bit of an illusion though, rather than reality.

I don't think it's an illusion. It's a good way of tracking how much, if any, you're losing. I've got mates that withdraw after every win and deposit before every bet. No way in knowing what you're doing then - not to mention it lets the banks know how much you bet.

I wouldn't be against betting on the favourites. If the value is there (ie odds compared to chances of winning) you'll still make money overall even if it's smaller amounts in each bet. Don't think you have to bet more just cos the odds are short, well too much more anyway.

Anyway, I'm still comfortable with what I'm doing - I just keep getting reminders of how easy it is for everything to get out of hand. This is probably a good thing to be honest - better the devil you know!

No, you’re quite right. Profit is profit at the end of the day. I actually tend to make more profit from golf than I do the horses anyway. Haven’t ventured back into that though since it’s resumed.
