Harry's view of Keane

Redknapp has had enough.

"I hate it when I hear people criticise him. He played a massive part in keeping us up last year, it's no coincidence we went on a great run when he arrived," said the manager.

"I felt the atmosphere around the place changed when he came, because of the way he is, the bubbly character he is - it's infectious.

"When he plays he's been great for us. He's scored eight goals, you'd settle for that wouldn't you. He's got eight in 12. If he keeps that average up he'll get 24 won't he? Even I can do that maths. Maybe 25 even!"

In fact, Redknapp's maths is slightly off. While Keane has indeed scored eight goals, it has taken him 14 games to do it - including two Carling Cup matches, both of which he scored in.

Redknapp also maintains that Spurs fans have no idea how important Keane is behind the scenes.

"I felt he was vital to us last season, I really did. I thought 'if Robbie comes back we're going to be okay', that's the type of feeling he gave me," said the boss. "I felt he was a key signing, because he was a personality as well.

"It's difficult for people to understand what it takes to make a football team. It isn't always just about having a team of superstar players - you need certain characters who make a difference to you, in the dressing room and on the pitch.

"All the good teams have those type of people. He talks to players in the dressing room and on the pitch, and gets people lifted around him. He gives you all that and that's so important.

Well, they're the points we've been making for some time. But, without throwing in a 'I told you so', perhaps the 'anti-Keane' camp (believe me, I hate to admit we Spurs fans have a divide like this) will be happy in the knowledge that their discontent has reached Redknapp's ears, even if he refutes it. Looks like it is his idea for Keane to drop back so much so why not just support the manager and players and continue to revel in out Champions League push?

I especially enjoyed the comparison between how the anti-Keane lot see his 4 goals against Burnley vs. Defoe's 8 goals against Wigan and Hull... so very accurate.

As has been said before, why we all can't just accept that we have a great strike force and support whoever is picked is beyond me...

So true, especially to some people on here.

Harry kinda sums it up there in those two paragraphs. About time something like this was said, cos God knows, some people on here need to read this....

But , Keane will still get needlessly slagged off, bashed, ridiculed and slated on here by some people because they know better then Harry Redknapp....

He is an important player for us for sure. But it wont silence the doubters. Who cares though? We're in 4th place and Keane has played a key role in that.

Unfortunately, as is the case with many of the people on this board, they will still refuse to listen to this and will continue to have a go at Keane.

Harry knows what he is talking about!

Bullcrap. If he keane does have a clause in his contract where he has to start, if fit, then harry is just defending the positions on this by that statement. We won 9-1 without him. Shut up.

An interesting and articulate point. Well done.

This isn't a new piece, it's just been rehashed.

It's also hardly surprising, couldn't really see Harry coming out and saying that the money he spent on him could have been spent far better and now he's probably worth nowhere near what I paid for him due to his consistently poor form.

It would have been refreshingly honest but about as likely as Liverpool winning the CL this year.

Still with the contract clause? If he was fit enough to make the bench then he was fit enough to start. But he didn't. No clause.

We won 9-1 without him. Shut up.

Brilliant. Let's offload Keane for that. And Modric and King can go too.

If it's a rehash why does Harry mention Keane's 8 goals?

Also, poor form, seriously? You just discount goals and assists and base the form of a striker on your own personal perceptions do you? I hope he continues to perform this poorly for the rest of the season. As the article says that's a 25 goal striker.

The only games where he has been out and out bad are where he has been stuck on the left. Which, no matter how much you want it to be, isn't his fault.

It's from a couple of weeks back, keane already had 8 goals at that point so it isn't new.

He hasn't shown the form of a 25 goal striker at all, I think his form has been undoubtedly poor wherever he has played. He had a very good game against Burnley and I think played well against both Hull and Liverpool. In other games like Stoke, Pompey, Arsenal, Chavski, Sunderland, Utd, West Ham he's turned in very poor performances.

I'm not anti-Keane per se. I'm well aware of what he brings to the dressing room in terms of personality but for me, I'd just rather have Crouch & Defoe upfront. With that I'd rather play a 4-4-2 and then with that I'd rather play Lennon and Kranjcar on the flanks.

So whilst I see the good Keane brings, on the pitch I believe those other players bring us more.

Keane is doing well and is now finding his role in the team. The work he does for us upfront is invaluable, I can only assume its people watching TV highlights who slate him so much, as it does not show how hard he presses the opposition and how this, in turn, gets his teammates pressing higher up the pitch.

He is one of the few players willing to give out instructions and directions on the pitch. I think JD is a better striker, but Keane is invaluable against the top teams when we need to work a bit harder.

Harry will start Keane and Defoe on Saturday - then if Lennon starts we will be back to the winning formula of early season (not that we haven't been winning, but not playing as well, IMO). kranjcar will play the Modders role so it should be a very balanced, and on the floor football game.

I for one AM frustrated with Robbie sometimes, and yes it is because for me "it looks like" he is not doing enough - but then again I am not a football manager with 30 years experience so what do I know. It is very difficult to argue with the manager (and why should we) when he comes out in support.

Seriously if questioned on the subject of Keane did anybody expect Harry to say much different than this?
