I'm not watching BBC but apparently Shearer has been misinforming the public by saying it wasn't offside?

I didn't see that.
They showed it, and they mentioned it was technically offside, but noone in the stands, studio or at home know what was going on.

And that was VAR made for calls like this

My son and I could've sworn that there was at least one other player playing him in for that first 'goal'.
We were convinced he was inside in the only two proper replays they showed and then in their dodgy computer mock-up, it didn't even show the player in question.

Really want to see that again in full.

There was 1 player, but you need 2 (1 is normally the keeper, but he was further forward)

Exactly. It was only one player. So he's offside.

This pitch has a strange roll to it. Like one of those threadbare pool tables where the cue ball never seems to stop once you've played your shot. It's like there's no resistance to it.

Anyone watching the UHD stream on iPlayer ?
Close ups look great but the majority of the coverage (from the wide panning camera) looks no different to normal HD for me.
Thanks for mentioning it. I've just switched to it and it's definitely a lot brighter and a better picture than watching the HD channel.

I don't think I understand football anymore! ?
The rule has since the 1920s or 30s been that you're offside if you're beyond the second to last player. But whenever the keeper ends up in front of the ball, as happened now, that causes chaos because most people instinctively think it's the last outfield player that plays on/offside.

A player is offside when
  • any part of the head, body or feet is in the opponents’ half (excluding the halfway line) and
  • any part of the head, body or feet is nearer to the opponents’ goal line than both the ball and the second-last opponent

Once you saw the VAR offside replay all was clear, surely, not getting how so many people are still confused (especially Spurs fans, given we had one of those with Kane only a while back).

The two issues are only that a) whether the law should save an absent goalkeeper like that, and b) that the VAR replay took about 10 mins to finally be transmitted to the TV viewer. Not the offside call.

Dunno what Shearer and Lineker were on about at HT either. VAR has actually made a fantastic spot picking up an offside, they just whinge about whether that's what it's was for. These two dumb fuckers were for years on the we need video refs!!!! bandwagon, how did they think it would work/be applied.....?

It's been like that for a while.
I wouldn't be against it changing to 1 outfield player, so the keepers position doesn't matter and that would have been onside

Agree. In the majority of cases, the rule would effectively be the same as it is now, but you'd cut out all the confusion in cases like this where the keeper is miles out. Seems like a no-brainer.

Question for you TV viewers. In your country, do you see this game with commercials or not? In Sweden this games goes on TV4 where they literally had 14 minutes of commercial in half time and 1 minute of half time analysis. If you want the analysis you can buy Cmore which is like equivalent to BT-Sport. About half the games are shown this way and half the games are shown in add free SVT which is state owned.

What’s it like in your country?

The US is probably 12 minutes of ads. But I accept it as their way to get their money back since they don't do ads during the match.

I get what you're saying but I guess there's a wider point that now we have VAR applying the rules to the nth degree, you end up with a lot of pedantic decisions where things are disallowed on some minute technical detail even though nobody from the players, fans, even the ref, thinks that it's a god decision to make even if it is technically the right one.

I'm not saying this is necessarily one of those cases, but I can see why people talk about "the spirit" of the rule etc.

Could be worse...we have to listen to Dion Dublin on BBC

Once you try to apply the spirit of offside then you make it a subjective decision. At least now offside is mostly subjective with the new technology.

Norway also has a 50/50 split between state broadcaster NRK, which is ad free, and commercial channel TV 2 who does the same as your TV4.
