Apparently we tried to make a deadline day move for the kid. Has a lot of potential but only recently moved to OM.

La Provence claim Tottenham Hotspur made a last ditch attempt to sign 21 year old Marseille star Florian Thauvin.

Having only signed for Marseille in the summer for £13m, the French club were unwilling to let their new star leave.

The attacking midfielder has in the past been heavily linked with a move to fellow North London club Arsenal.

Spurs reportedly offered cash plus French midfielder Etienne Capoue but were immediately rejected.

Blessed with electric pace and ridiculous skills, Thauvin has already bagged 6 goals and 3 assists in his debut season at Marseille following an unhappy spell at Lille.

Doing no business eh? Doesn't seem like Daniel and Franco were listening when their coach said that

I like him and would be relatively excited but he's yet another left footer who best excels on the right. Unless we're writing off Lamela I see no need. Felt the same way about Salah.

What we really need imo is the opposite - a right footed left forward. At this point Konoplyanka is about the best realistic option I can think of in this regard. I'm sure others here will be more aware of other options though.

Think Antoine Griezmann might be attainable at the end of the season. Otherwise Fischer, or Tello?

PSG want Griezmann, I think he will be beyond us come the end of the season he is also left footed. Although I would still love him. Tello is not good enough in my mind, Muniain would be the better option if looking to Spain but he would cost a lot. There are a few good Belgian and Dutch youngsters such as Bakkali and Depay but both are probably too young to make a immediate impact.

Yes! Griezmann would be my first choice actually, and I was semi hoping we'd go for him in the Summer (though it seemed an outside shout with Sociedad in the CL). Must kick myself for forgetting about about him. Another left footer but one who actually excels on the left side of the pitch, likes to cut in and is an extremely good goal scorer - perfect for what we need. Could imagine him and Eriksen dovetailing delightfully.

I'd like to see us go all out on this as I don't think it's unrealistic. Alas, I somehow doubt we will.

Griezmann is 3rd leading goal-scorer in the league atm with 14, there will be bigger and richer clubs interested in him.

Thauvin would be a very good buy. I watched him play for France U20s in the U20 World Cup last summer. Thauvin was their most creative player and picked up 3 goals in the competition. The U20 World Cup is as high a standard as you get below full international with a large % of players progressing to become top stars so the form line is excellent. France won the tournament; Thauvin was their best player. Shame we missed out.

I agree with this (although I know nothing about this Florian kid) I feel Lamela is not in Sherwood's plans and the only reason he played him was to justify the price tag.

Having said that, the club nor Sherwood has come out and said we're after this kid so meh!

I dont think we should be assuming that Lamela is not in Sherwood's plan. As far as we know he is injured right now and is due to return soon. Watching the video of this Thauvin kid just makes me think he's exactly the same kind of player so I really don't think there's much in this rumour.

Long term I still see us with Lamela on the right and Townsend on the left.

Griezmann recently said he wanted to stay in La Liga as he felt it suited him and he was talking about Real. Much as I think he's a great player I'm not sure that they need him or for that matter Barca need him, not because of any fault the player has but simply they have decent options and both have other priorities. Not too many other clubs in Spain have the money though although AM always seem to be able to cough up a big fee and this year will have CL to convince their bankers.
As said by others PSG are sniffing around and he is French so maybe with their money they'll convince him, but either way it looks like it will be tough for us to tempt him

Thauvin looks like a player in the making to me. Watch the way it looks like he is gliding along the pitch when running with the ball, a sign of excellent technique.

From the little I've seen although a left footer he looks comfortable with both feet and comfortable playing wide or narrow either on the left or right. Allowing Lamela is similarly comfortable, then both together would give us great ability to interchange when we attack. Yeah I like the look of this lad and am going to keep an eye on him

The guy seems to be able to ride tackles which I like. A touch of the Hazards about him in his body strength.

Tottenham and Chelsea are showing serious interest in young French attacker Florian Thauvin. RMC reported on Thursday that both cubs had sent scouts to watch him recently, but that Tottenham had outnumbered Chelsea, sending two scouts instead of one. Whether that is any sign of which club is interested is unlikely, but it's no wonder Thauvin is getting attention.

Arsenal have been linked with the player for some time and last September we covered their interest:

'Arsenal linked with a young French footballer? All the stars are aligned then. Arsene Wenger is apparently watching the situation of Marseille's new signing Florian Thauvin, as the youngster' football star grows at the roughly the same rate as his reputation plummets.

The 20 year old had been at Bastia since 2011 and signed for Lille in January, remaining at Bastia until the end of last season. His future appeared to be settled and then he decided he wasn't happy with the contract Lille had put him on. Yaya Sanogo got a better deal at Arsenal and Thauvin, the more established player, began to think that Lille had taken him for a ride as far as his salary went. He wasn't prepared to simply roll with the situation and made it clear he was unhappy, failing to turn up for training. Marseille made their move and signed the youngster from Lille, a club whom he never got around to playing a game for.

TMW, report that Arsenal have retained an interest and are keeping an eye on the player's development, both on and off the field, ahead of a move in the summer of 2014, something TMW class as 'very likely'.'

Thauvin has since said that his contract wasn't the only issue with Lille. He'd agreed to sign for the club largely due to Rudi Garcia, but when the manager departed for Roma it gave Thauvin something to think about.

His subsequent move to Marseille brought an awful lot of criticism, he was held aloft as an example of all that's wrong with young French footballers. The level of criticism was almost certainly unfair and he's impressed this season in the south of France.

The versatile attacker has spoken of having World Cup dreams and it's a possibility that he'll be on the France plane to Brazil this summer, if his development continues for the rest of the season. Marseille have the player on a contract until 2018 so it would cost any of the Premier League clubs mentioned a big sum to get the 21 year old from Ligue 1

Probably end up on loan somewhere in Spain for the next few years if Chelsea have anything to say about it.

Florian Thauvin... sounds like a character from the hobbit!

I know nothing about him but surely Chelsea and Arsenal have enough tricky, attacking midfielders already?

So he wants a good salary and a well know manager. Well, we can cross this one already
