Tottenham to take on Real Madrid for French sensation

Tottenham are ready to battle Real Madrid for the signature of Florian Lejeune, considered one of the brightest defensive prospects in France.
Lejeune, 20, currently plays for Istres in the French second tier but has been tracked by a host of top clubs across Europe.
Real were thought to be leading the chase to sign him but reports in France have revealed Tottenham are also in the frame.
Despite being earmarked as a star of the future, Lejeune is still something of an unknown quantity and it is understood he would cost less than £1million.

Sport.co.uk understands that Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is tracking young French centre-back Florian Lejeune.

The defender, 20, is currently plying his trade in Ligue 2 with FC Istres but has been watched by several of Europe’s top clubs including Real Madrid and Marseille.

Tipped for a bright future at the top of the game the defender is set to represent his homeland in the under-20 World Cup this summer, a platform which could see his profile raised and his value rocket.

Arsene Wenger has already gone on the record stating that with a myriad of options in midfield and attack, he will only look to add possible defensive cover during the January transfer window and it now looks as though Lejeune is a possible candidate to fill the gap left by the injured Thomas Vermaelen.

Speaking to Sport.co.uk the player’s agent revealed that while it was by no means certain that Arsene Wenger was readying a bid for his client, he was aware of interest from the Emirates.

“About Arsene Wenger I do not know exactly what his situation is.” Claude Cauvy explained to editor Nigel Brown.

“A number of top European teams have contacted me. There are two or three Ligue 1 teams tracking him, This week from Spain Real Madrid inquired about him and are very interested in him.

“Already Espanyol and Deportivo La Coruna have asked about him. Since last season he is developing the reputation as the best young player in the second division in France. Last summer Olympique Marseille were interested in him.

“But he decided to stay at Istres as he is a young player, and it was best for him to play games and develop. I am sure L’OM will try and take him again, but there is interest from a few clubs. We have informed five other clubs in England of his availability, but there is no official contact yet, only interest.

“The priority of the player is to go to England, not Spain. But until today there are many possibilities from Spain, but from England only interest, nothing official. We are looking for a club in England, but it has to be the right project for the player.”

Cauvy also explained why top teams would be advised to move for Lejeune sooner rather than later with the player set to be watched closely by potential suitors from across the globe this summer.

“Under normal circumstances we would be looking to transfer Florian next June. But the player is an international with France under-20s and he will play in the under-20 World Cup in Colombia next summer, so perhaps it would be better for a club to purchase him this January rather than wait until next summer because the price of the player could rise considerably.”

The player’s representative also revealed that the youngster has a growing reputation in France with fellow professionals hailing his qualities as better than former FC Lorient defender Laurent Koscielny who signed for Arsenal in the summer.

“At 19-years-old he is a very young player, very tall at 1 m 92 cm, very good in the long pass, and very good in the air.

“I am told by a number of players that he is better than Laurent Koscielny who signed for Arsenal in the summer.

“Istres cannot ask for a lot of money. He would cost around 1 million euros as his contract finishes in June 2012. I am sure he will leave either in January or June, as there is a lot of interest. During the first half of the season he has been watched closely by a number of scouts, and we believe he will be a big big player.”

The youngster had previously been compared to France World Cup winner and current national team coach Laurent Blanc by Istres club president Francis Collado before he this morning went on the record about contact being made by several clubs.

"This is the time when many people come to see the players. We have a young talent, it's flattering for us,” confirmed Collado.

“Clubs are looking for young prospects in the second division, but that does not mean they are going to sign him.

"Yes, recruiters came, but we have not had any contact. There is absolutely nothing official."

If we are to believe any of the reports today Arsenal are challenging us for this lad, Falcao and lukaku. Worryingly they are also linked with Eden Hazard which would be a shame if he went there - they have enough young talented players. Not sure we need yet another teenage CB with the likes of Caulker, Kaboul and Bassong all under 25 as i can't see us signing someone who may not get in the tam for 3-4 years. Given Arsenals rubbish defenders he'd have a shot of getting in there in a year!
