So, the FA have had "talks" with the Sun regarding their outright bullying of him on the front page today, but aren't actually going to lodge a formal complaint.

Why the fuck not?

With the Euro's coming up I'd imagine they don't want to shake the hornets nest too much.

Considering Hodgson knows 5 languages and the Suns entire readership totals about 1.5 it is a bit rich.

Or, alternatively, they could take on the Sun and bitch-slap the shitrag into oblivion, making that one less media outlet with the potential to undermine yet another England boss.

That would be nice, the Fa do what the Leveson enquiry probably won't.

I don't think the newspapers should be a cheerleader for the national team though, some of the stuff they've done and printed has been horrific because ultimately the most important thing for them is to shift papers rather than the England team do well - although when England do well paper sales go up so you work it out for yourself!

Sir Alex Ferguson had a dig at the Football Association today saying Roy Hodgson’s appointment as England manager was the first time they had ignored a media campaign.

Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp had been the hot favourite for the job since Fabio Capello quit in February.

His cause had been championed by many pundits in all sections of the media but the FA turned to Hodgson this week, handing the 64-year-old West Brom boss a contract through to Euro 2016.

“The surprise for me was that for the first time I can remember, the FA didn’t bend to the press,” said Manchester United manager Ferguson today. “The press had their own view of Harry. We all supported that.

“Roy, as everyone has pointed out, has fantastic experience. He is a good man and has the right profile for the job in every respect.

“You can’t beat experience. I have always said that for that England job you need to be in your 60s.

“You need to go into it with all the experience behind you in the sense of do you really need club football when, at that age, you could be managing your national team.

“I always said Jock Stein was the perfect age for managing Scotland. He had all that experience of managing Celtic. Roy has all that experience behind him. I hope he does well.”

Hodgson has just 26 days before he must name his squad for Euro 2012 and one of the issues to resolve is whether to select both Rio Ferdinand and John Terry.

Chelsea skipper Terry will appear in court in July to deny a charge that he racially abused Rio’s brother, Anton, in a match at Queens Park Rangers in October.

Hodgson will ask the Manchester United defender if he is willing to play alongside his long-time England central defensive partner at the finals.

The early indications are Ferdinand would accept but even if he is in the squad, there is no guarantee he will start as his last international was against Switzerland 11 months ago.

The first half of Ferdinand’s season was disrupted by a back injury and it has been rare for him to play more than one game a week.

Ferguson, though, is impressed by the way Ferdinand has coped and thinks his form and experience would be invaluable to the England squad.

“He has done fantastic this season,” said the Scot. “There was a period where I played him in three games in seven days from the end of January but apart from that it has been every seven days. He’s coped very well and has had a fantastic season. I haven’t spoken to Roy about him but experience will be important at the Euros.

“I think Phil Jones and Chris Smalling should go but they’ve not played a lot of football this season in terms of centre-back play, so
you go back to what you are left with. You have John Terry and Rio Ferdinand and Gary Cahill. Then you have Jones and Smalling. There is not a lot after that.”

Ferguson’s focus, though, is on the title battle after United were knocked off the top of the Premier League by Manchester City on Monday night. The clubs are level on points but City’s goal difference is eight better than United’s with two games each left to play.

While United host Swansea and go to Sunderland, City travel to Newcastle and then finish at home to Queens Park Rangers.
Ferguson said: “Newcastle is a very difficult place and they are playing well. Winning at Chelsea, as Newcastle did last night, is very difficult. We have not done it for eight years.”
