Good post, I agree!

Playing devil's advocate though, perhaps there's a trade-off with high fitness levels.

Perhaps you don't have time for extra tactics or video sessions (or whatever), if there's a lot of time spent on conditioning.

Perhaps there's an increased likelihood that a player will get worn out or injured.

Perhaps some players will never get to an 'elite' level of fitness, so the coaching staff goes easy on them...which might mean that they have to go easy on everyone, to keep the peace in the squad.

I don't know, but some ideas to ponder.

That said, it's probably the fact that managers tend to be very single minded; you kind of have to be at this level. So if they don't move with the times and developments within the game, they might stubbornly stick to methods that worked previously, which don't necessarily work now.
I think that there is probably a combination of things that contributed to our 'lack of fitness' that isn't explained simply by a lack of work. When we are talking about the pinnacle of elite sport the difference between 95% fit (us) and 98% fit (eg Liverpool) is huge, whereas you wouldn't even notice the difference between 45% (me) and 48% (my elderly grandmother). We've heard a lot over the past 10 years about 'marginal gains', and I believe that gap contains a lot of missed opportunities.

It won't be closed simply by beasting the team around Hotspur Way (though that will do a bit). Banning ketchup and mayo might only gain us 0.1%, but the message it sends will convince (some) players to change their lifestyle positively in a couple of other ways that turns it into a 0.5% gain. There will probably be changes to conditioning and targeted work for each player. Simply having Conte on the sideline will cause an effect. We ran 10Km further against Everton than United, and no-ones going to convince me the players became that much fitter in 2 days with the new manager. They were simply more inspired and motivated.

TL DR - We will reach peak fitness not simply by more running, but having a more professional set up that wins us half a percent here and there.

Love the beginning where he's listing the staff he's going to bring.

Reminds me that I said this in the Nuno thread

All this talk of him getting the sack no matter how badly we are doing should be irrelevant until we have an actual manager worth appointing waiting in the wings. Currently unless Levy has finally agreed to employ half of italy to Conte's backroom staff that is not the case.

I was sorta right  I guess it was the case

The man absolutely commands respect doesn’t he? You can detect his steeliness, his demanding 100% commitment, but he also has a warmth about him that I love. Some of the best leaders I’ve known have been very human and supportive but rule with ‘an iron fist in a velvet glove’. I’m very optimistic, genuinely optimistic, for the first time in a long time - but woe betide anyone that takes him for a fool! COYS!

That part was very interesting. His way or no way - he made that clear to Daniel!

Levy sitting there thinking “fuck me, how many more are there to employ!”

Yep loved that bit.

Lists all of his staff to Levy, then looks him dead in the eyes & says "I hope the staff at Tottenham will be collaborative because we want to know everything".

This man is gonna change the whole "make do" nature of this club.

Finishing 4th and qualifying for CL is not enough to satisfy a serial winner like Conte.

We're in for hell of a ride.

You can talk with surprise about fitness not being addressed. But then I’ve seen the stuff on ESR who apparently has just given up take aways and Chocolate. He’s 21 at a supposed elite club and it’s taken him till 21 to sort this ? Apparently said he was getting cramping at 60 minutes. Find this genuinely astonishing with all the nutritional stuff and sports science. I’d expect an academy player at an elite club to have all their fitness and nutrition sorted out by 18 if not before.

Really enjoyed this. I'd love it if the social media team started putting out more content like this occasionally, a more documentary style fly on the wall look at behind the scenes. Conte throwing chairs in the dressing room, players' faces dropping when they find out there's no ketchup in the canteen any more. Stuff like that.

He's just a bundle of energy. Interesting that "the marine" was his fitness coach as a player and he was so impressed he wanted him in his team when he became manager.

No excuses left for the players. They can't say they've been allowed to get unfit, they can't say the manager isn't good enough or tactical enough. The only reason we don't get to latter stages of comps is if the players don't execute the plan.

Very confident with the big caveat that Levy needs to just leave it to Antonio and Fabio to deal with the football side and don't start veto-ing transfers or go back on promises.
