Part of me feels the ideal scenario would be to just use the kids regardless. A lot of people (including myself) felt that we were stretched last year and could do without the distraction whilst building a team. Fergie and Wenger did it in the early rounds.

Harry tried that and we went out in the group stage.

First game we need the first team and hopefully seal it wit 3 to 5 goals. In the second leg the guys who need a game and then lets see.

We got AEL Limassol FC (CYP) in the draw and play the first leg August 21st away and second leg on August 28th at home. Could be a lot worse IMO.

good draw.... a chance for the players who are not pick in the firsrt11 to impress the boss.

All 3 Cypriot teams in the draw drawn at home first leg, and European games are usually held in Nicosia's gsp stadium, so there's a chance we'll play on the Wednesday or in larnakas Antonis Papadopoulos stadium on the Thursday.

We should obliterate them. Usually, I would make a point about how we should be wary because they beat Zenit but Zenit are obviously managed by AVB, so I'm not surprised.
We should always be wary. Small ground, fanatical fans, hot weather, bouncy turf etc.
It won't be easy. Zenit only just sneaked through over the two legs.
Hopefully we will take it very seriously.

Any of our Cypriot fans (or not) know anything about this lot? Any stand out players etc?

Anyone know from experience if the club usually run an official travel package for these games?

AEL a decent cypriot team, nothing special though, they are a team that scores very few goals but are tight at the back...can see us beating them 1-0/2-0 away and 4 0r 5 at home, how do i know? i am currently in Limassol :D..and will be here for the game...:D:D:D:D:D:D

they won't be playing in Limassol though.......probably in Larnaca like in the Champs League qualifiers

Don't agree we need the first team.

We need to strike the right balance. As you say, under Harry we just chucked all the youth players in at once and under AVB we used almost all the first team bar one or two right the way through the group stages and our league form suffered as a result.

The likes of Lloris, Verts, Walker, Davies, our first choice CM (whoever it turns out to be), Eriksen, Lamela and Ade should be nowhere near these games, particularly travelling away from home.

Vorm, Vlad, Dawson/Kaboul, Rose, Naughton, Dembele, Bentalab, Holtby, Lennon, Townsend, Kane. This team is more than good enough to deal with anything the group stages have to offer. And in the event we are draw against one tough team in our group we can play a slightly stronger side.

They beat them 3-0, not sure of the was aggregate or second leg but still looks fairly comfortable
