It won’t over estimate the effect it will have on fans. I’d be delighted to win a trophy at last. Ignore the internet warriors and rival fans on the other side of the world, winning the trophy will be great. Although I expect we won’t unless we change the a large proportion of this group of loser players.

Its better to win a 3rd rate competition than lose it so naturally fans will be happy but it will be cringe if our fans act like Jonny big bollocks if we win it.

So happy, yes, but in terms of getting the confidence so we can declare we’ve got the monkey of our back and start giving it the biggun? Nah.

They weren’t in the competition when I wrote that post, hence not including their names.

Pillock.
Gee, sorry for YOUR ignorance!
maybe, just maybe, you find out who we‘re competing against before you blather about trouncing teams!

but, that’s just what an intelligent person would do, so I get your disadvantage.

FYI - Villarreal are now out of the ECL.

By winning the Europa League, they’ve qualified for the Champions League instead.

Sorry if already asked and answered... but does anyone know when we’d have to play our first qualifying game?

"Each group stage victory (in the ECL) will be worth €500,000, with a draw seeing a club earn €166,000. Finishing top of the group sees a club pocket €650,000, and second place €325,000".

So actually not too much less than the Europa League which is what they need to do to encourage teams to want to win it.

Yes better than i thought it would be, would be good money for those smaller teams who rarely get into European competitions.

The more I read about this competition the more I actually am looking forward to us being in it. For sure it's not the European competition we want to be in, but given the rest of the teams involved it's our best shot at a trophy next season and an ideal opportunity for us to give some youth and fringe players some good exposure.

I think we take it more seriously the further we get through it and by the latter stages we should be playing stronger teams to hopefully guarantee success. Other teams will take this seriously, we should do the same.

On the competition as a whole, I actually think this is a great move by UEFA to give that next level of clubs the chance of some European competition and increased revenues. For some of the smaller teams this will be huge, we should not look down on the competition or the teams in it just because they might be smaller than us. They will be fighting to win every game, I suspect it will be tougher than we anticipate and so should treat it with respect.

This is not Spurs related, but this worries me. It could end up skewing smaller leagues in favour of these teams if they are getting so much more money coming in than their competitors. You get the strongest clubs suddenly having so much money (relatively) that they completely dominate their leagues. We've already seen it in countries like Croatia, where Dinamo Zagreb basically have a stranglehold because of the money they've banked from the Champions / Europa League.

Not too much can be done about this, it's always the case. Pretty much the same in the top 5 leagues.

So with Villarreal out we’re talking about Roma as our main competition? Is that it or are there any other notable clubs?

This is a really interesting question. It might have that effect, but for the first time since forever UEFA have done something which might actually push some money further down the pyramid. Sure that might create some monopolies or duopolies in some leagues. In others it might strengthen competition, or just help clubs be more financially viable. It’s money that wasn’t available to them before.

Hibs will be in from Scotland. If they had a good run in the groups stage could that help them close the gap a little bit with the Glasgow clubs? I don’t know. But obviously beneficial if it did help in that way.

Feyenoord are in it. AZ and Anderlecht too, but it's not the 80s so meh. Fenerbahce could conceivably find themselves in it, as could Dinamo Zagreb :X3: if those two get knocked out of the qualifying rounds for CL or EL. Then you also have the teams who finished third in the EL groups coming in for the preliminary knockout round ahead of the last 16. You'd think those teams wouldn't be much cop, but you could have a 'big' team have a mare in the EL group stage I suppose.

EDIT: I should add that I wouldn't worry about Roma; their new manager is shit.

That's the positive spin. Hopefully it works out that way.

Basically Roma is the only club we wouldn't be considered at least 80-20 favourites against in the whole tournament. This is incredibly winnable...

This does happen. Speaking to a Merthyr Town fan and asked whether they would leave the English league and he said it was basically pointless as the same team wins the Welsh league every year and the little bit of money they get from European football kills the competition.
