I don't really agree with the concerns about contract buyouts setting a bad precedent, mostly because I've always assumed it's a negotiated amount and not the full contract amount so there is some financial advantage to the club to negotiate a release. But maybe I'm wrong on that and I suppose a player could always refuse anything less than the full amount.

But it does really highlight why letting players get into the final year of their contract is awful squad management. Really need to sell or extend when they have two years left or else the club loses a lot of power. It's a big reason I wanted us to sell PEH and it's not as simple as "he'll be useful as a squad player to close out games."

next year we would be hearing "we can't sign xxx since we can't shift PEH/GLC/Gil/Sess etc" again

We can’t “just sell” because they are people with a contract and not slaves.

I know it’s cool to blame the club for everything and a levy particularly but if players don’t want to move, there isn’t much that can be done about it.

We’ve been in a tough position for the last few years in that we pay higher wages than most clubs in the world, but lots of our players aren’t good enough to go to the very best teams who can pay more.

If we have to register Eric, if there's room in the squad, as a 4th choice cb or an emergency dm if injuries dictate, it's at least an option for the last year of his contract. I'd be astonished if he goes to Turkey or Saudi.

And we won't be able to play front foot football in every game. Might be a useful experienced guy to throw his body at the ball.

Need to move him on now. He has had a chance to move on. Don’t need players just picking up a salary around the squad.

hope he can revive his career elsewhere

Totally. Love people on here, but everyone goes into a frenzy with no dose of reality. It’s going to take 2-3 windows to sort us out.
Nobody in the league bar possibly City are sorted.

Exactly. I read on here when we got Ange that we need to give him a few transfer windows to complete the rebuild. Fast forward to the deadline, after his first transfer window, where we strengthened every part of the team, and fans are going mental because we didn’t sign a back up centre back.

Did Arsenal or Liverpool build their teams under Arteta and Klopp in one transfer window? Have Man U built their team for ETH yet after three transfer windows? These projects take time.

I don’t wish any bad feeling on Dier. He is now 4th/5th choice and that’s his choice

The issue I have is that he is only taking £5m in wages why could Levy not have stretched the budget for a replacement we will have to buy in 12 months anyway and that Ange wanted

as usual it leaves a bad taste

Because the corona pandemic might be over, but the brain rot pandemic is still looming large.

Interesting to see if, with GLC out injured, he makes the matchday bench.

Hope not, it would be stupid to have 4 defenders on the bench just because they are seniors, rather than have a younger option (Donley, Santiago, Véliz)
It's something Conte definitely would do, but I hope we have a manager that thinks different now. If not most of our talents should just try to get out of here.

A player is a normal person with family and responsibilities. Your job is only one part of your life.

Being sold/loaned to some random team so that you can play may not be the most important part of his calculations.

He seems the a thoroughly decent chap who would want to play and we don't know the full picture. In which case I do not blame him one bit. It's just not ideal for anyone.

At last someone actually talking some sense in this thread. The hate shown to Spurs players by fans is frankly embarrassing.

I appreciate the upside for him of becoming a free agent next summer.

But if he stays and does not play for a year, he will struggle to find a lucrative move next summer IMO.
He's in the same camp as Maguire, where game time this season will be extremely limited whilst picking up millions 💰💰💰💰

surely Fulham would of been ideal, same city, prem club, better suited to his style of player, Portuguese manager

Fans going mental - no, just pointing out the obvious.

All ITK pointed to the club and the recruitment team realising the defence needed strengthening, on the same page.
The most direct ITK of all was Ange in his preseason press conferences stating he wanted reinforcements at the back, I may be misremembering or paraphrasing here but I'm certain he said a couple in at the back.

We just sold our best player in the modern era for 9 figures, weakening a position considerably, the least we could do is look to really give the manager a boost and properly strengthen another area of weakness from last season.

You seem to have ignored the fact the club were scrabbling around in the last hours trying for a loan off of Chelsea, it was obviously known we needed reinforcement and smacks again of last minute desperation.

Lets hope Sanchez plays out of his skin this season and puts himself in the shop window for a sweet deal in the sun somewhere, but lets not keep defending the shitshow.

I don't think there are much hate shown to players like Dier and Lloris for example. Footballing contract at the moment, IMHO, has protected the players too much, just ask Tanguy. In any case, staying, leaving or being released are all beneficial to Dier/Lloris on a monetary level. But going to a new club has an additional incentive for them to play, since Ange has made it so clear to them they won't be part of the plan. It's this professional level of decision not undertaken by them that left sour taste in our mouths. And even more so when they are the ex leader group who we expected them to exhibit a more sporting decision-making.
