Wouldn't get into any other side in the league. 29, he ain't getting any better... or faster. But if he keeps trying those Hollywood cross-field balls, maybe one day he'll get the hang of it.

Nice, intelligent lad who cares about the club. There’s a reason he’s stood out to every manager we’ve had. He’s so far down our list of problems.
He is the root of our problems in the back line, him and sad to say it Lloris.

Though to be fair the whole team have been trained to not play football, but that is most apparent at the back.

There is something that all managers during Dier’s time here have seen in him. He has played most games every season he has been here. He is on the player committee. I remember earlier in the season there was talk about him being a starter for England again - he was playing well. He and the rest of the team have fallen off, but it’s always defenders who get the flack as they are the final link in the chain. See Royal, Sánchez, Romero over past few months. Their confidence looks destroyed. Could see new players next season - it’s important not to be hasty.
Had a great start to the season, got in the England squad and then gifted Liverpool with a 50p header. Turned to absolute shit since then. Weak minded a doesn’t back his own abilities. Clearly. Needs selling. Or giving away. No great defensive qualities. Donkey Dier as he is known in our house.

And that is the problem right there, we accept mediocrity. Our yardstick should be having players who would be a definitive starter in any off the Top 4 teams. Honestly, he wouldn't get into any of those teams.

I don't think he is good enough for a championship team now

If we're comparing him to Van Dijk or Romero, no he's not as good as those (although this season neither Van Dijk or Romero have been that good either). You've got a lot of CBs in the top - Saliba, Gabriel, Dias, Ake, Stones, Varane, Martinez, Botman - who have ups and downs too, and I'd argue at the end of last season Dier more than suited a top four team, cos he literally did. I'm not arguing he's Beckenbauer: I'm suggesting that when you see the nightmares the likes of Koulibaly have had this season maybe it's not so easy to fix. He's a good lad with a good head on his shoulders and good ability, which Conte and Mourinho agreed upon: we've got far, far worse problems than a player who makes mistakes but is unquestionably committed.

Just because when he’s been underperforming so have the majority of our players. This is why we have lists of 20 players who need to go. Definitely a few will not fit in the next iteration but writing off after this terrible period of the club is knee jerk, even though it’s a prolonged issue. I feel like we should half the squad but it’s not practical or helpful, and will not happen. A clear out rarely equates to 15-20 first team squad players, and most of them will perform well as squad players.

Decent defender but technically limited.
If I was the oppo manager I'd make sure Romero was man marked and the ball was given to Dier because he'd give the ball away with his limited passing ability.

Hes not even a decent defender, hes shocking positionally and lets not even talk about his 1/1 game.

Slow, lumbering, casual, gives away too many turnovers in dangerous positions near his own goal.

Time for change back there.

Nothing against him at all but it really is time now to move on. He flip flops between OK and dreadful and that just isn't good enough for where we want to be. I think coaching has a fair bit to do with it as well, and playing non possession football puts so much pressure on, and when confidence drops it invites problems. As an aside, all of our CBs also seem to be obsessed with keeping their hands behind their back to a point where they rarely get a block in. What's that about?

yup, this the absolute key point with him and many others. In a well playing team they can be ok, in a team that's not playing well and/or has to rely on individuals to carry it, he's nowhere near good enough to stand on his own ability unless he has others around him playing well enough to mitigate.
