He brings a lot more to the club than just what he does on the pitch. He's great in the dressing room and with the media too. I'd be happy if we looked for a decent back up to Dier rather than somebody Dier could play second fiddle to. I have no idea who that would be either because of the leadership and organization Dier has brought to our back line.
To say nothing about how his ability to speak several languages has helped bring players in and helped them settle in.

Dier's position is the one you don't rotate in at all, you want the middle CB to be ever present. A cover for that position won't get game time at all, like with Rodon, who when we finally had a need he wasn't ready. Ideally we'd keep a sixth CB like Tanganga for emergencies, but I feel that Sanchez is too high status and expensive for the role. It's a squad role where player is given to rot and be rusty if he doesn't have other options to play (in different position, or U21). It comes to a certain point in depth where Fagan-Walcott and Paskotsi should be considered, or even Emerson Royal for the RCB rather than someone who haven't had a game for 4 months
We have PL, CL, FA cup and league cup this season and Dier cannot play in every game so will have to be rotated from time to time or run the risk of a long term injury.

I love Dier, even when he was playing shiteI had great respect for him because clearly he has other qualities. There is a reason why all our Managers have had him in the team in some form or another. He has been brilliant since Conte took over but he was also playing well under Nuno but more inconsistent. Again, I think he is our most important defender because he sits in between the other two and marshalls that defence.

If Southgate grew some balls, he would put him right in there in his team for the world cup - not just squad but first team.

At the current rate of play for English Defenders, Dier should have a starting WC spot locked up before kick-off tomorrow.

We absolutely must sign a backup / competition for Eric. Seems to me really odd that this hasn't been a priority, and we're not being linked to any centre backs, given how bad we were when he was out and how much Romero struggled when moved to the middle. Obviously Sanchez can't play that role and I don't think Lenglet can either.

I would not trust him in a back two. Gets a lot of pressure off him being in a 3. Not having to mark a player and having the luxury of effectively marking space.

Been great again today. I don't think anyone think he's the next maldini, but he's a 7/10 every game. Don't think he's rated high enough by some really.
Absolutely disagree he wasn’t great , we need a commanding centre half who wins balls in the air , he was ok but I feel he will make a mistake , only my opinion

It certainly wasn’t just him , I just disagree that he was great , I think the only defender who was great today was Sanchez
I understand why you would say that. But like you say it wasn’t just him, defensively as a unit we were very good

A bit of semantics: Great vs. Okay. Can we settle on 'good'? As I said 7/10 (modern ratings). I think it's important to recognize how he's anchored the back 3, no matter who has slotted alongside him.

I love Dier, but he wasnt great today but doesnt mean he is not essential to how we play and that back line. Ill put it this way, Dier is our most important defender. The last couple of games we have kept clean sheets. If it was Dier out and not Romero, I dont think we would have the organisation to have kept clean sheets... we saw it last season when Dier was out.

About time, however knowing us he’ll probably get injured

If true I am really pleased for Eric as he deserves his place over the Southgate love children. But am I alone in wanting him to not get picked to prevent him getting injured or burnt out this season?
