Didn’t watch the game last night but judging by the write up the defence has to change for World Cup. Surely Dier gets a chance in the two September nations league games?

Hard to understand how he has been overlooked. In one respect though Dier should be happy. After last night he entered prime Maldini territory in comparison.

Only if he plays centre of a 3. He is not good for four at the back.

Yep, Dier in a back 3 might be England's best defensive strategy.
I think Coady should play also.
A lot depends on our WBs then

As in not good enough compared to Maguire and Stones?
It’s not about who is better. The point is you play the players that suit their best positions. Put Dier in a 4 is not the answer and would end with him being vilified by the press and fans. If we play with three centre backs then Dier on his current form is a must.

I think there’s big pressure on him now in a key position. If we are really being talked about as title contenders I don’t think many outside Spurs would think he is good enough to be the defensive mainstay in a title winning team. For me he definitely deserves to keep his place after his form last season. But the pressure is definitely on, but great opportunity for him to make the WC squad.

The one thing Dier has is that there are not many centre backs can distribute the ball very well with both feet who are available, but also have the ability to come in to midfield to receive the ball from Throw ins etc and feel comfortable.

I know we have been linked with the likes of Bremer who in my opinion although is a better defender then Dier, his ball playing is very very limited (similar to Sanchez level) so in a Conte system I feel Dier still has that significant advantage.

Just saw this stat about Dier:

"He's been a Tottenham player for eight full seasons, playing 2,800 Premier League minutes in half of them. Their league finishes in those years: third, second, third and fourth. Their league finishes in the years he didn't hit the 2,800-minute mark: fifth, fourth, sixth and seventh. I'll allow you to draw your own conclusions."

Super important player in many respects. A leader, for sure, but also I think we need to deal with a bit of a risk: If he's out, who can effectively replace him?

Even Romero (Sanchez - fine at RCB) and Harry (Richarlison) have cover if they're out - not sure who plays CCB if Eric doesn't

I'm a bit surprised Coady hasn't been looked at. He's a lot like Dier in that he's made for the ccb role, he's an experienced premier league player and a club captain/leader.

He's going to Everton for a reason. The fact he and not Dier still gets in the England squad is a sad reflection in our national team manager's judge of a player. While I don't mind Coady he isn't as good as Eric and neither is Maguire, who should be nowhere near the england team let alone squad.

How good is Eric Dier, better than quite a few on here think, one mistake and everyone is doubting him, but then again thats why we are fans and not picking the team

Dier and Holjberg are our current scape goats. How anyone thinks these are our WEAK links is beyond me. Dier in particlular loves this club and i for one love him back . The chants Saturday after he scored were fantastic

What are the chants? So good to know that he's appreciated.
