Club simply can’t give him a new deal. Surely someone has to put a stop to it. He’s total deadweight and needs to be one of the first ones cut not extended. Horrendous again today.

I’ll always remember his debut goal against Westam fondly. I hope he never plays for us again though.

He was slim, enthusiastic, decent bit of pace and worked his arse off… fast forward to now and he looks and moves like a heavyweight boxer and thinks like one that has been knocked out more times he can remember.

Needs to be set out to pasture. Has the turning circle of an oil tanker and makes Maguire look good.

I think about the only thing he has going for him is the fact that Sanchez, Tanganga and probably Rodon are even worse than him.

I was previously of the opinion that it might be worth keeping him around as an experienced 3rd/4th choice, but...nah. It will be a necessity next season as we can't replace 4 CBs at once but no way should we offer him a new deal.

I think the only reason he had decent spells under Jose and Conte is cos those 2 play with a deep back line and he's fine at the meat and potatoes, heading it away in the box stuff. Under a manager that plays a bit higher and leaves him remotely exposed he's absolute dog dirt.

He looks Championship level in 1v1 situations these days.

My thoughts exactly, I've now switched in that regard too. Unfortunately, it's unlikely that we can afford to look to actively sell him, but we have to try and ensure that we'll be in a position where we can have him on the pitch as little as possible.

He's definitely more suited to playing in a deep back line.
It's similar to how Dawson looked good in a deep back line alongside King/Gallas, but wasn't suited to the high line we played once AVB took over.
I still think Dier merits a new contract - simply because he's better than several other CBs who we need to move on first. Shouldn't be getting a big pay rise though...

I don’t even think this is true. We have NEVER seen Dier play good in a 2, don’t forgot he was quickly dropped down out of the starting line up when his biggest fan mourinho was playing it (even Japh went above him in the pecking order at one point after a few MOM performances) and Sanchez had one great season there and quite a few good performance (his howlers weren’t as often as people make out)

sanchez and tanganga have never been offered the luxuary of playing in the middle of the 3 which they’d both piss over dyer tbh (especially japh with some good coaching)

And to me, now that we have many people who observed, he is probably the cause and reason for us always dropping deeper because he is probably afraid of being beat for pace, so will fear pushing too high up

If he dropped any deeper he would be sweeping behind the GK.

Eric has become a nightmare. Just ridiculous running alongside Dier. Go on then Marcus, have a shot.
it was a good come back but it’s quite likely the same will happen first half Vs Liverpool.
United had been well beaten by nearly all the top half teams in the away games. We made them look like World beaters in the first half.
we are just about at our correct position for the season….8th. Then rip it up and start again.

I was listening to some pundits talking about how Lascelles should leave Newcastle as he's not getting games. He was Newcastles best defender pre-Howe. But, Howe has decided he is not good enough or not the type of defender he wants to move forward with. We need a coach who is allowed to bring in a top defender and shift Dier to the bench. Lascelles could have been like our Dier, but Howe has realised and moved forward with something different. We need to be brave and do the same with Dier.

I think he was to blame for both goals. The first comes because Rashford drops off the front line and is able to turn uncontested. Maybe Skipp and Hojbjerg had their angles wrong and could've blocked the lane better, but in a three man defence surely he should step out at these moments. We watch two man defences do it with Kane all the time and prevent him from turning.

The second is just typical Dier. Stand off the man and let them dictate how the rest of the encounter goes. He's done it for so many of the goals we have conceded this season that oppposition coaches must know that if they can isolate him 1v1 we will concede a big chance.

the second goal is as bad as it gets. no anticipation, not enough pace to close off the required lane but also not even enough to get in any kind of challenge. Unfortunately once it becomes obvious there's a weakness and you're repeatedly targeted there's only one outcome. If i was the opposition i'd be isolating him and targeting him 1v1 with anyone with half an ounce of pace.

am sure he's a great lad but not of the required standard i'm afraid.
