Not sure there is another English born Portugal bred CB out there...

Tiago Ilori? Portugese but English born, also from Sporting Lisbon. However Liverpool have wasted him thus far. Shows that you need to play games to improve. Has he yet featured on loan for Villa this season?

One moment on Saturday answered my questions on Dier's credentials as a centre midfielder. It was when he received the ball in the second half from one of the centre halves with his back to the play and with some pressure being applied, spun with the outside of his foot to turn past the player and pass it out to wing.

Anyone that understands football who has played before in both defence and midfield at any level, knows how much harder it is to receive the ball with your back to play then if you are facing especially so deep. Modric was a master at it, just dropping his shoulder and turning off in the other direction.

It just gave me the confidence that this lad has a very good understanding of the game and his composure on the ball is one of his biggest strengths.

I actually think he's probably still a CB long term but he can play this role very well clearly. If he does become a CB for us long term, this will do nothing but good for him and us going forward anyway but hey, maybe he'll want to stay in the middle.

He's not doing it against the Carrierbag FCs only.

If he does get injured or pick up a suspension, I wonder whether the solution might not be to bring Wimmer into the defence and advance one of the two CBs into his DM position.

Story of the season so far. Very pleased for him. Great energy, attitude and committment. Oh, and the black boots even make him look hard. Pink or orange boots? No chance.

I wouldn't want to mess around changing our CBs. They are awesome together. I'd rather have Wimmer play DM if forced.

Jamie Redknapp in DM:

ERIC MUST BE ON ROY'S RADAR

Roy Hodgson was watching at White Hart Lane on Saturday and if he wasn’t already, then Eric Dier will definitely be on the England manager’s radar now.

He is a really intelligent young footballer. He is quick, passes the ball well and knows his limitations — he is happy to do the dirty work and let others take over.

He has experience of playing in defence but Mauricio Pochettino has been using him in midfield this season and he has been excellent. It is that versatility that makes him such an exciting prospect.

Dier thinks like a defender so knows where to position himself on the pitch but now he is proving himself in midfield.

He had to deal with some top attacking talent against Manchester City but as his pitch map shows, he was everywhere in the middle and he scored a fine goal.

Hodgson may have looked at him as a defender but now he is forcing himself into contention as a midfielder, because England haven’t got too many like him.

Already looking better than Scott Parker, just as 'lay it all on the line' but more technically accomplished. No slight on Parker, he had a fantastic 9months or so before he gassed out on us.

Monster who still somehow looks a softie who no doubt loves his nan.
Think that's a touch harsh on Parker! He really was epic for that 9 months, very very intelligent footballer.

Dier however, jesus f-ing christ. Kids looking dare I say young Ledley-esque. He'll have some dips in form, he can't keep this up at his age but wow, he has all the potential to be the absolute business.

Thor is the fucking don.

Good to know the England U-21's are in good hands, when Southgate didn't think he was good enough for the squad

The real talent is the way he just pokes the ball away from attacking players a bit like Ledley would of done. He stands still and simply pokes the ball away.

Thats the central defender in him but where he has impressed me is on the ball, such a good passer for such a tall and big lad.

Had to that his brilliant heading game, his drive, energy and passion to win and we have a fantastic player.

I think as the defensive unit continues to grow we are going to see Dier become even more comfortable on the ball in midfield. I think the group, despite being relatively solid so far this season, has considerable room for improvement and it's exciting to think what that might mean for Dier and the rest of the group.

You have to love how earnestly he seems to look for the positive pass before settling for the easy sideway or backward pass.

Still find that moment in the NLD last week hilarious when he just came flying in from off camera and got done by Oxlade-Chamberlain.

We have to bench or rest Dier for Swansea game. Last thing we need is Dier to get 5th yellow & become unavailable for Liverpool
When was the last time there was a yellow card in a spurs/swans game? There may be one/some but it doesn't come to mind. These games are not known for their stoppages of play/fouls/tackles. It's always amazing how fast these halves go because the teams 'keep it movin'.

That said your point is well taken. He will pick up a tactical yellow in the liverpool game I suspect as Bournemouth is the next league game.

My limited point is, we could win Vs Swansea without Dier - am not so sure against Liverpool
