He didn't play well, but our FBs were worse giving their opponents plenty of time on the wings to measure their crosses.

What did Verts do or say to be described as petulant? And he's stated several times that he wants to stay.
True. He’s not wantaway but neither has he signed a new contract. I think his performances this season have been woeful and he has not been around the first team. Is there a good reason for this ?

I'm trying not to get ahead of myself but would love him to kick on in the team as a CB now.
Yea same and think he’s done ok first 2 games back in at CB, lots of people unfairly hating on dier at the moment in my opinion.

He’s dreadful and has been for years.

He’s never a CB, poor positioning and reading of the game. He’s not a DM either. Just not a very good player.

like everyone else though it’s hard to write him off completely under such a manager as everyone is poor nowadays under him.

Looked slow and tired, certainly not as good as he was mid week, maybe just not match fit right now but he can certainly play better than he did tonight

Maybe we were asking too much for him to come straight in and play 2 on the bounce. We'll see after international break

He needs to stop thinking he is Toby. Dreadful passes. Keep it simple. Not the answer to any of our problems though.

he’s always been poor when played at CB bar one good game against United I believe years ago.
Can anyone count his good performances at CB on more than one hand?

Think it's going to take him a fair bit of time to get back to full match fitness.

Need to remember with Dier that he has suffered a lot with illness this last year, In many ways, it might have been a lot easier for him to regain match fitness if he had been out injured rather than out through illness.

He did well when we were in a 3 but as a 2 not really tbh but then again I can't count the amount of times he's actually played there consistently

Don’t think passing the ball to our players rather than theirs is really asking that much of him.

Thing is he kept trying to play the ball out with his left foot and he would either under hit it or just pass it to the sheffield players and then follow up and point at Davies and son like they were at fault for his shitty passing.
SU pressed well - Dier had no positive passing options nor Eriksen (of old) to drop back a little to give him an option.
But in the absence of any other play maker, he is prepared to try - he can often see the pass, but cannot execute it.
The alternative would be for him to hoof it, but our forwards are embarrassingly bad in the air.

I think that as everyone wants to bash Poch and the players at every opportunity this will be ignored but you need to give great credit to Sheffield Untd today, they pressed and hassled our players into mistakes.

I thought Dier wasn't great today but he was clearly the person designated to play it out and every time he looked up the midfielders were hiding and a SU player was hurtling toward him. He therefore had to make some hurried efforts that went wrong - all this with very little football played this year. It's not great but I don't think this suddenly makes him an awful player - he was always going to need several games to play his way back in.

Once Winks came on he quite frequently did have an option to pass to and took it.
